First it was Tim Wakefield. Then it was Mike Timlin.
Another spot on the 2007 roster has now been guaranteed. Alex Cora has signed a two-year deal to remain with the Red Sox. If you speak Spanish, check it out here. If you don’t … trust me, or go to any sports news website and find out in English.
I don’t know the terms, but his previous deal was for two years and $2.7 million. I’m willing to bet he took a pay cut, as he signed that deal coming off being a starter for the Dodgers.
Cora finished with an abysmal line of .238/.312/.298, mostly due to a horrendous post-All Star Break line of .193/.238/.259 after hitting .300/.402/.350 in the first half. A career .244/.310/.344 hitter, Cora is considered a future manager by many and one of the smartest players in the game. He can also flash the glove at second, short, and third. He doesn’t have blazing speed, but is above average. Since the job of a backup middle infielder is to flash the glove with above-average speed and contribute marginally with the bat, I’m fine (and happy) with the signing. He’s fit in with the Red Sox since arriving and is a favorite of Terry Francona’s and Theo Epstein.
