“There is no reason to believe he cant outpitch the greatest closer of all time again next season.” A note of caution- I am sure that is what they said about Eric Gagne, we all had Kerry Wood and Mark Prior in the HOF, etc. He had a great year and will be an excellent closer. But show a bit of caution in anointing him the best closer in the game and better than Rivera so quickly.
In regard to Dice-K, he is going to be really good. I just found it funny how you pointed out that he beat the Reds opening day lineup. Dont get me wrong, no hitting anyone is a feat, but the Reds may have the worst lineup in baseball. Griffey just came back, their best hitter hits .240, and the rest of the lineup is filled with utility players. Adam Dunn walked twice, which prompted pigs to fly and made the devil buy a parka. It was a very good performance, but if he goes 5 shutout every game this season, he would lose alot of wins due to his pen. Anyways, he is going to be excellent, but I put less stock in today’s performance than you. (BTW, Igawa doesnt look half bad either, which actually surprises me.)
I wasn’t saying he’s the best closer in the game or even that he’s a better close than Rivera. All I said is that it shouldn’t be surprising if he outpitches Rivera again next year. He has a long way to go before I’d be comparing him to Rivera on more than a year by year basis.
As for Matsuzaka’s performance today, it is only one of his performances that give an ERA of around 2 for this entire spirng. It’s not the only time he’s looked impressive and I’m sure it won’t be the last.
I didn’t see Igawa pitch today but I’ve been surprised by his results lately. I spoke earlier on Bronx Block about how he can be deceptive. He doesn’t pitch like major leaguers, he uses his breaking ball to set up his fastball. I’ve seen a lot of hitters just sit and watch against him as they get called out on a straight 90 mph fastball. It looks as if they aren’t expecting it. I’m curious to see how both Japanese pitchers (and Okajima too who’s also looked great this spring by the way) do in the regular season. 6 days to go!
I gotta say, that starting staff is looking amazing. Now if only the offense, which has been lethargic of late, would get going, so I could enter the season with no worries about the club…
I’m sure they’re bored out of their mind. For the pitchers these last weeks are important but for the hitters it’s really unnecessary for the most part.
Mike, what is going on with you on the yankee board?
I sent Tony an e-mail a while ago asking for a truce and we both agreed to be more respectful of eachother. Then Tony said some very insulting things to me so I gave up on treating him with respect. He thinks I’m undermining his writing when I provide a differing opinion but debate is what the discussion boards are for. There are plenty of Yankees fans who offer differing opinions and he has no problem with them. Even when I offer a positive opinion on a Yankee player he claims I’m “covering my own ass” so I don’t appear to be biased. He’s currently deleting every comment I make there, including the ones I make on other writer’s articles.
I don’t know, I’ve been commenting on the Yankees page at MVN since before Tony was a writer there and none of the writers have ever had an issue with me. I’ve been talking Red Sox/Yankees with people like you for a while now too and other than me being a Red Sox fan I’ve never got the impression that they had a problem with me. For some reason, Tony does have a problem with me. Perhaps he doesn’t like Red Sox fans commenting on a Yankees articles but the discussion boards are supposed to be open the the public and I’m not the only Red Sox fan who comments there.
Yeah way to spin the story your way.
You said disrespectful things to ME and not the other way around. You deleted my comments on here long before I did. And I said repeatedly in the BronxBlock comment sections that I welcome the criticism of Red Sox fans, and have had quite a few compliment me on my writing. But you even admitting to trying to get under my skin on purpose. So please don’t try to build yourself up as some kind of martyr. It’s transparent and hilarious.
I fully admit I’ve been immature in the way I responded to him but it was pretty out of line. He’s the only writer I’ve ever witnessed call their readers names in the comments section of MVN.
Whoa you are deleting my rebuttles on your site now? And when did I namecall readers?
So you can delete my rebuttles but I can’t yours?
You’ve called several readers names, give me one instance when I called readers names?
You sent an email and I asked if you would be polite enough to stop throwing such unprofessional comments onto BronxBlock and thought it would be best if we only commented on our own sites or found a neutral site for Yankees AND Sox fans to debate, argue, etc.
Tony, I’m not going to stop commenting on BB just because you don’t like it. I’ve been commenting there since before you wrote there. You’re just going to have to accept that I comment there. We can give the respect thing another try. From now on I’ll treat you with the same respect I give anyone else. Hopefully you can do the same. I apologize for not being as mature as I should have been.
Would you agree to keep the discussions to just baseball and not discuss who is making the points about the teams?
Wow. I love this site, and I think both of you are great, but you are killing this site. Most of the debate on this site that makes it fun is the interplay between fans of the two teams. If you guys could find a way to stop the insanity and make a truce without curtailing the enjoyment that we all get from the site, that would be fantastic. If not, the site is really going to suffer.
I know, I apologize Mo. Hopefully we can work an agreement where we can both comment on eachother’s sites.
Amen.
I am still waiting for the time when I namecalled a reader.
And you deleted the comments I made in defense of what Mike said in comment #6.. Luckilly I copied and pasted them:

Man, what are you guys 2? Don’t comment on my site, I’ll delete your comments, stop taking my lunch money. I’m sorry but you guys are a joke. Chill out, you guys are writers for blogs. Its not like you guys are world leaders debating a foreign issue. Its the Red Sox and the Yankees. There are more important things in the news, like how Tampa is going to surpass Baltimore. Obviously, i’m kidding. But still stop fighting like 15 year old girls on their periods and get over it.
I agree Dave.. except I actually am a world leader debating the effects of high oil prices on the domestic economy.
Just kidding. But I can’t wait for the games to start counting. Cashman just announced Louisiana Lightning the Opening day starter by the way.
For the record, I agree with Dave B. Tampa has a GREAT chance of finishing 4th, but I’m still picking them 5th because of their joke of a pitching staff.
I’ve got to agree, something has to change with the comments. I read both Firebrand and Bronx Block, but the bickering in the comments is starting to turn me from both sites. I realize there is going to be an inherit amount of debate and antagonism between Sox and Yanks fans, but that doesn’t mean the work has to suffer.
Thank you Evan, finally i can find someone to agree with me on something.
Pitching, pitching, pitching. Baltimore’s bullpen is also a lot better.
Bullpen is a lot better? Than last year or the D-Rays? If you are going to say last year, well i just don’t see it. Their pick ups were a lot of names but not a lot of actually substaince. Baez and Bradford dont exactly strike fear in the hearts of hitters. I actually thought Britton was a big lost. He could have bee a real contributor to their pen. If you are going to say the D-Rays, well maybe. But everyone is so quick to jump at my case for the D-Rays to pass the Orioles hitting, it is actually Baltimore that needs to catch up the D-Rays pitching. I don’t see that happening. They may not have the pickups of Baltimore but they do have young pitching progressing.
[...] Dice-K Outing and he is crucified. All I know i I like his attitude about wanting to get better. [...]
Than the Devil Rays. Although it’ll probably be much better than last year as well. If you think the names they have now sound bad consider that last year they had the second worst bullpen in the AL.
