Born on the 37th anniversary of the the day Babe Ruth died (1985) which later became the day Jimy Williams was fired in 2001 (a monumental event at the time), Evan was too young to experience the pain 1986 brought, but a deep wound was sowed in 2003. Since then, Fire Brand has become a blog that Red Sox “club officials read,” as per Peter Gammons. Evan enjoys working out, writing, reading, quality television, science fiction and history and being newly married. He is a professional baseball journalist as well as president of a state non-profit and member of the Board of Directors for a national profit. (Twitter.)

dice-k has to come up aces, cause I've seen Cain pitch and when he is on, he is unhittable.

  2. Dave. B June 16, 2007 at 7:54 AM #

Cain is a great young talent. Today should be a great showcase of 2 young pitchers.
I'm extremely disappointed we missed out on facing Lincecum. He is my favorite of all the young arms in baseball. His 2-seamer is just plain nasty and his minor league stats are almost unbelievable.

  3. Zach Hayes June 16, 2007 at 9:18 AM #

Dave, that's precisely why I'm pleased we're NOT facing Lincecum. You're right, he's plain nasty with his fastball regularly at 97-98 and the hook. Instead, we get Matt Morris who is having a great year but due for a whuppin.

  4. Dave. B June 16, 2007 at 9:40 AM #

Yea, i normally would like to see him but since I hardly ever get the chance to watch Giants games it would have been nice to see him.

  5. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 10:11 AM #

    Dave B:
Lincecum is really fun to watch, but Cain is as well. The Sox actually might've had an advantage with Timmy, because he hasn't fared well against any of the patient offenses he's faced this season — like ZIto, by the way.
If Cain's fastball and changeup are on, this is going to be a long, long afternoon for the Sox hitters. His curve and slider are also good pitches, but it's that heater/changeup combination that makes him so dominant.
And yes, Dice-K will need to be in top form today or this one could get ugly. The Giants' not-so-patient offense (glares at Pedro Feliz and Ray Durham) should help Dice-K a bit, but he'll need to command his pitches well if the Sox are going to win this game.
With that, here are the starting lineups (some of you will be pleasantly surprised with the absence of a certain #23 from the Sox order)
    Giants:
    1. Dave Roberts, CF
    2. Randy Winn, LF
    3. Ray Durham, 2B
    4. Barry Bonds, DH
    5. Bengie Molina, C
    6. Nate Schierholtz, RF
    7. Rich Aurilia, 1B
    8. Pedro Feliz, 3B
    9. Omar Vizquel, SS
    SP — Matt Cain
    Red Sox:
    1. JD Drew, RF
    2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
    3. David Ortiz, DH
    4. Manny Ramirez, LF
    5. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
    6. Mike Lowell, 3B
    7. Jason Varitek, C
    8. Alex Cora, SS
    9. Coco Crisp, CF
    SP — Daisuke Matsuzaka

BTW…if anyone wants to chat, I'll be here — nervous, scared, and pessimistic as always that our lead will start plummeting again.

  7. Dave. B June 16, 2007 at 10:18 AM #

Look who is putting together a pretty good month, my boy J.D. Drew. He's got a line of .306/.350/.528. He isn't walking as much as he normally does, 2 walks for 36 ABs, but that will come around. A player doesn't just lose his eyes. What is extremely exciting about those numbers is the .528. If he can maintain a SLUG % at .500 for the rest of the season, we will start to see why we went out and get this guy I know its a small sample and a little bit of a knee jerk off of last night, but come on. I might be the only one, but i love him as a player. He brings all the attributes you want from a player. Solid D, good arm, speed, great plate discipline, and an all around good hitter. I know he hasn't shown it yet, but water always finds its level. He will come around and be worth the investment (at least for the first 3 years).

  8. Evan Brunell June 16, 2007 at 10:38 AM #

    Dave,
I'm with you. I like him a lot, and even when he was in that horrifying slump, he was/is one of my favorite players.

  9. Zach Hayes June 16, 2007 at 11:00 AM #

Zambrano with a no-no thru 7 at Wrigley. There was a brawl earlier in the game with D-Lee and Chris Young missing haymakers at each other following a HBP.
Also, Yanks 6 Mets 5 in the 5th at the Toilet.

  10. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 11:22 AM #

    Updates:
Big Z has lost his no-no in the 8th; still 0-0.
Yankees 8, Mets 5 in a rain delay in the 6th inning. Yankees have scored 2 runs in each of the past 4 innings. Mets had a runner on 1st, nobody out, and a 2-1 count on Carlos Gomez when it started pouring.

  11. Zach Hayes June 16, 2007 at 11:34 AM #

Dan, I'll be in the chat if you wanna join.

  12. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 11:46 AM #

Cool, Zach — I'll be there.

  13. sabes June 16, 2007 at 12:05 PM #

what is this? walking bonds? is Tito in drugs or what, it's only the first inning and this guy is just the shadow of the hitter he used to be, this is a stupid move…

  14. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 12:09 PM #

well…Bengie Molina didn't make us pay.
Tito must've gotten his Bonds strategy from Clint Hurdle earlier in the week.

  15. Evan Brunell June 16, 2007 at 12:12 PM #

I'm at Six Flags right now, keep me updated, please! Let's go, Dice-K!

  16. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 12:17 PM #

    Evan:
    Play-by-play style…
    Drew: 8 pitch strikeout
    Pedroia: flyout to RF
    Papi: 7-pitch walk
    Manny: flyout to RF
    0-0 after 1.
    DiceK: 18 pitches
    Cain: 22 pitches

  17. Zach Hayes June 16, 2007 at 12:22 PM #

The Mets crappy relief duo of Mota and Schoenweis are blowing the game. 10-5 Yanks in the 6th, with the Yanks having scored 2 runs in each of the last 5 innings.
Meanwhile, Dice-K is all over the place again.

  18. Evan Brunell June 16, 2007 at 12:22 PM #

8 pitches? That makes the strikeout worth it. I was playing JV one day and I pulled the count full while having … at least six foul balls (and that's not an embellishment) … ended up King, but my coach was very pleased.

  19. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 12:29 PM #

    Evan:
    Giants top of the 2nd…
    Schierholtz: Grounder 2B

    Zach: chatroom?

  22. Zach Hayes June 16, 2007 at 12:37 PM #

    I'm in.
Did Tim McCarver just call Cap'n Intangibles an elite defensive shortstop?

  23. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 12:41 PM #

    Giants top 3rd:
Roberts: Grounder up the middle (nice play by Cora)
    Winn: K swinging

  24. Evan Brunell June 16, 2007 at 12:43 PM #

Dice-K needs a quick inning here.

  25. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 12:43 PM #

    Zach:
u sure? DaveB and I are the only ones shown in here for some reason. Try clicking on the link from today's post again…not sure why you're not showing

  26. Zach Hayes June 16, 2007 at 12:48 PM #

I'm trying the chat over and over again and can only see myself in the room. Weird.

  27. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 12:52 PM #

    Sox bottom of the 3rd…
    Cora: lineout to SS
    Crisp: Double off the monster
Coco to 3rd on wild pitch
Drew: Popout to LF (too shallow to score Crisp)
Pedroia: flyout to LF (Coco stranded)
    Cain — 52 pitches through 3

  28. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 12:53 PM #

Zach: try Internet Explorer. not sure if that makes a difference, but I've had weird things with firefox also

  29. Zach Hayes June 16, 2007 at 12:58 PM #

I've been trying with IE and nothing. Firefox just freezes up my computer every time I click on the chat. Whatever.

  30. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 1:03 PM #

    Giants top 3rd:
Bonds: long foul to right, then flyout to deep CF
    Molina: single to LF
    Schierholtz: K-looking
    Aurilia: K-hacking
    DiceK — 64 pitches thorugh 4

  31. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 1:04 PM #

Zach: weird. I'll try again in a sec.

Dude go back I got it haha

Good to see Manny show up!

  35. Zach Hayes June 16, 2007 at 1:16 PM #

Keep trying Dan I'll be in there.
Manny finally with a HR. The lack of power from him lately has been concerning. And on cue, Manny gives DP a bear hug in the dugout. Adorable.

  36. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 1:18 PM #

    Bottom 4th continued…
    Lowell: flyout to LF
–Cain wild pitch –> Youk to 2nd
    Varitek: K-swinging
–Manny just hugged Pedroia in the dugout (felt it was worth mentioning for some reason…)
    Cain–77 pitches through 4. 1-0 Sox after 4.

  37. Evan Brunell June 16, 2007 at 1:25 PM #

    Poop

  41. sabes June 16, 2007 at 1:43 PM #

Dice-k is making too many pitches and getting guys to deep counts, where's that pinpoint control that scouts said he had?

    Dice-K (102 pitches). 1-0 still.

  43. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 1:49 PM #

    sabes:
that 3-2 fastball to Aurilia was it.

  44. sabes June 16, 2007 at 1:52 PM #

yeah that was it, but 102 pitches through six innings against the miserable giants lineup is awful

  45. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 1:57 PM #

    Sox in the 6th…
    Dusty: grounder to SS
    Papi: flyout to LF

  50. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 2:33 PM #

End of play-by-play (I'll get you the important stuff, Evan)

  51. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 2:41 PM #

Sox had 1st and 2nd with one out, but Dusty GIDP'd.
Drew got his first hit (1-for-4), and Coco has two hits today!
    C'mon Paps!

  52. Evan Brunell June 16, 2007 at 2:43 PM #

Thanks for all your help, Dan! I just got into the car so I've got the radio now.

  53. Daniel Rathman June 16, 2007 at 2:51 PM #

    'tis over. 1-0 final.
    W: Dice-K (he deserved it)
L: Cain (he didn't deserve it)
    S: Paps (easier than ever)
