9/7: Walk The Line

September 7th, 2007 GAME THREAD

Baltimore Orioles (60-79) @ Boston Red Sox (85-56)

Jon Lester (3-0, 5.26) @ Daniel Cabrera (9-14, 5.06)

7:05 PM EDT at Oriole Park at Camden Yards (Baltimore, MD)

TV: NESN | RADIO: WRKO 680, WROL (Sp.)

AL EAST GAMES: TOR @ TB | NYY @ KC

PRIOR GAME VS. BAL: Boston 7 @ Baltimore 6 on 9/6/07

DECISION: W: Clay Buchholz | L: Danys Baez | S: Jonathan Papelbon

STAR OF THE GAME: Clay Buchholz: 3 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 K

RED SOX'S PREVIOUS GAME: Boston 7 @ Baltimore 6 on 9/6/07

GAME NOTES: Clay Buchholz shined again last night and would have come out for the ninth had the Sox not taken the lead. Part of me thinks this is a good idea, part of me wants him to pitch as little as possible while staying fresh for a potential postseason run of glory. Lester and Cabrera are known for their erratic control (hence the headline) ... will it be a long game, or can Lester pound the zone? If the Sox win today, they move 30 games above .500 for the first time all year.

So Evan tells me that batters have only gotten one hit in their last 45 at-bats against Papelbon. Sick. His ERA is dropping like a rock as well, only 2nd to J.J. Putz who's currently sporting a 1.48 ERA.

This may not be the best place to do this but I feel like comparing their stats so here goes...

Papelbon

IP: 51.1

SV: 34

SVO: 36

Hits: 24

R: 9

ER: 9

HR: 4

HBP: 4

BB: 15

K: 77

Putz

IP: 62.0

SV: 37

SVO: 39

Hits: 31

R: 10

ER: 10

HR: 6

HBP: 2

BB: 12

K: 68

Pretty similar stats but Papelbon definitely owns the K's and hits allowed even though he's pitched fewer innings. Can't put Putz down though, he is pretty much responsible for the Mariners surge this season.

Then there's that all-star game this past July where Putz almost blew the game after Papelbon pitched a shutdown 8th inning. I won't bore you with the details.

Y'all will probably laugh, but I really like that line up tonight and next year. Keep Moss around and Kielty as next year's Hinske to push Drew, trade Manny for the Angels' farm system and I would be happy watching this team every night. Not going to happen, but still.

Love the lineup...now win.

I'd actually consider sitting Drew for 2-3 days just to get it into his head that HE BETTER HIT OR ELSE. Kielty's a very solid option in RF and he's a switch-hitter (though he's much better against lefties). Give him a shot and Drew a rest and see if it gets JD anywhere.

Evan:

Could you put the chat link up for the game thread? I'll be in there if you get it up.

Speaking of which...way to get us rolling Youk, Drew, and Tek.

Why Gary Thorne, why? I hate MLBTV sometimes.

Thanks, Zach.
