Why is keeping Lowell so important? His career EqA is only .277 and his career line is .280/.344/.468. He is 34 years old and is going to get 4 years. If he is hitting .250/.310/.420 in 2 years i’ll be completely shocked.
Obviously the questions with Lowell is … Will his production at the plate decline too far over next 2-3 years to make him worse than the alternatives? The answer to that question has really become a matter of opinion now … Personally I think he has a couple more solid years at the plate left in him … maybe not numbers like this year but solid 5-6 spot numbers … add that to the professionalism and veteran leadership … and I think he is at least worth us trying our best to sign him to a 2 year contract, with an option of some sort for a 3rd year … if he won’t go for that then we have to explore the other options … as much as I love the hot stove I hope Theo can grab him for 2-3 years and make this a boring offseason for us lol
but I may be dreaming … 2 years with a 3rd year option might be too easy … of course I also never wouldve thought Schilling would take an 1 yr 8 million dollar contract with incentives to stay in shape lol
Reports out of Boston.com say that Lowell is looking for a guaranteed 3rd year and will take a “hometown discount” if the Sox guarantee that year.
I still like a Cabrera trade. And if the Marlins would take Ellsbury instead of Buchholz, I’d at least talk to them. Look Ellsbury is amazing, but we haven’t seen the kid go through a low yet. He doesn’t have power. Coco is a better fielder.
I love the kid, but the Marlins aren’t looking for a salary dump here. They want something good in return, and gaining a quality player like Cabrera is going to hurt a little.
“1. Trade Manny/Lowrie to the Dodgers for Kemp/LaRoche”
The Dodgers could just use these two and perhaps a couple of Ethier/Hu/Delmoan and get the 24 year old Cabrera whose contract is much cheaper and could be locked up long term versus two option years. Besides with Hu and Abreau they are probably not that interested in Lowrie…either way, not gonna happen
Obviously Cabrera is a 24 year old (same age as Ellsbury) certified superstar, so it’s unrealistic to think we can have him without giving something in return. We know the biggest problem of our lineup is the lack of power, and he can solve that problem instantly. Our lineup becomes an instant superpower with him.
I like Lester, and I think he is a solid player and give us a valuable insurance policy for the rotation. But he is still a longshot for superstar. So if we can make him part of a package for Cabrera, we have to do it. As simple as that. That’s an offer we cannot refuse.
On the other hand, the Marlins could be interested in Coco. His good globe would shine in their park, and even his hitting should improve under less pressure, and in the NL. Throw a couple of good (but not too good) prospects and we could have a deal.
I know maybe I’m overly optimistic here, but I think there is not many teams who can offer a better package than us without hurting themselves too much. The Yanks need Hughes and Chamberlain. And others might prefer to sign A-Rod or Lowell.
And by the way, i think JaredK has make a very good point (55)
And don’t forget the possibility to use Coco and Lester as a part of a three team deal.
Cabrera’s contract isn’t much cheaper. He is going to be well within $5M of Manny next year. If they are gonna trade for Cabrera it is going to take Kemp/Kershaw or something along those lines.
Lowrie is a better prospect than both Abreu and Hu. Hu will be lucky to ever be a league average hitter.
I think trading for Cabrera is the best thing for the future too.
We know we have a lack of power right now, and we are seeing the last year of Manny almost for sure. We don’t have much power in the farms, and it’s very probable that we are not going to have another opportunity to sign a player with the talent and youth of Cabrera again. Let me remind you: power hitters are the most expensive of the comodities in this days. Every team wants them, and no one wants to let them go. Aquiring Cabrera now, and signing him long term, can be the best move we can make for the future. Finantial-wise AND Baseball-wise.
We all like Lester and the other kids, and hate to see them go, but the bottom line is they can be replaced. We are not going to have another oportunity to sign a 24 year old who happens to be one of the best hitters of the game so easily.
A rumor suggests that the Marlins had Chad Billingsley, Matt Kemp, and James Loney on the table for Miguel Cabrera during the regular season, and turned the Dodgers down.
That doesn’t bode well for anyone looking to get him…
