It is about time a team to picked to be in the World Series got a win. Unfortunately, it came against the Red Sox in a 7-2 loss.
Jon Lester gave up four runs after getting an early 2-0 lead in his second start but got the loss with four walks, no strikeouts, and surrendered five hits. Lester ran into trouble in the fourth inning giving up four runs which was capped off by a Marcus Thames two-run home run.
The Tigers later scored two in eighth and one in the ninth to break the game open for a five run lead.
Goat of the Game: Red Sox Offense
Two runs off of Jeremy Bonderman is not something to cheer about. David Ortiz went 0-4 and continues to slump in the three-hole for Boston.
Preview of the Next Game: Nate Robertson (0-0) vs Tim Wakefield (0-0)
Someone has to get Ortiz going or otherwise this offense is going to go nowhere fast. Also, the top of the order cannot go 0-12 against Jeremy Bonderman and company. Think about it!

Standing down the RF line, it was *cold*. We eventually ended up moving down to the LF line where it was more enclosed, and it was much better.
Shame Lester got killed in that inning. Sigh, wish we had Santana, or Cabrera. Oh well, still nice to be back at fenway.
The Red Sox never should have loaded the bases in the second. I’m of the opinion that it should have been 4-0 when Bonderman left the game.
Also – the Red Sox didn’t hit a ball hard all night.
I’m not trying to start an argument; those are just my thoughts.
It’s gonna be fun to see how the Tigers handle the knuckler tommorrow after finally figuring out how to get some hits against “normal” pitching … heres to Wake baffling them … and Ortiz getting this offense going
If Lowell hadn’t gotten hurt and I were managing the Sox, Papi would sit tomorrow. I wonder if he’s just tired from all the flying, and with the Yankees coming to town over the weekend, I wonder if a day off could get him going. It’s also worth mentioning that Ortiz is 3-for-19 lifetime against Nate Robertson.
Of course, with Lowell temporarily shelved, Tito doesn’t have the luxury of giving Papi a day off since a regular bench player will be in the lineup anyway. I’m guessing that Sean Casey will get the nod…though part of me wishes that Alex Cora could hit right-handed, because Robertson can be very tough on lefties.
We’ll need Dr. Jekyll tomorrow.
This was one of those classic games where the Sox had Bonderman on the ropes, left him off in the 1st (strike out-throw out), 2nd (DP with the bases loaded), & 3rd (standing a guy on 3rd). They had their chances to knock out Bonderman, gave up some big outs for free, and that was all she wrote.
Teddy is 100% correct. We had that game in our hands, but just strange plays (Papi shouldn’t have swung on that strike ‘em out, throw ‘em out, since it was at his eye level and it would’ve meant 1st and 2nd with 1 out and Manny up) and stupid moves (why the hit and runs!?!?) doomed us. Also, having Lester pitching didn’t help.
How can a lefty with a wicked cutter who throws 94 not miss any bats? lordy.
