GAME NOTES:
The Red Sox (read: Julio Lugo) coughed one up last night. There’s no better time for the ace to take the hill than after a tough loss. The name Justin Verlander usually strikes fear into opponents’ hearts. This season however, the picture for Tigers fans, hasn’t been so rosy. A 6.28 ERA has lead to a horrific 1-5 start. But he’s got the talent and I wouldn’t put it past him figuring it all out tonight for this marquis match up. And, oh yeah, Lugo’s in the lineup tonight….any chance he could redeem himself?

How quickly you forget last season. Comparing Papi and Lugo, yikes.
Naw, I’m just trying to light the same fire under Lugo that I apparently lit under Wakefield. (I ripped on him after his loss to Toronto, then he went out and had an outstanding game against the Tigers.) With luck, after tonight we’ll be able to say Lugo’s name without spitting.
And I wasn’t really comparing Lugo to Papi; I was comparing we fans’ reactions to their individual struggles. Maybe I did go a bit overboard, though. ;)

Hansen is looking good, hopefully this will mean the demise of Lopez.
how would Hansen help with the Lopez issue? Javier is back to having a normal split, so he’s done pretty well against lefties this year. Unless Hansen has some weird reverse split I don’t know about, seems like Hansen and Lopez are unrelated if we feel we need a loogy.
We have our Ace, with an other Ace or two in the works.
Becket is so good, he allows our pitchers to believe in redemption. Hansen, Delcarmen, Lopez, Aardsma, are getting it together, gaining confidence, and will be part of a more formidable pen than last year. Inconsistencies? Heck yes. Look at Becket, Wake, Buchholz, Lester, Matsuzaka, Shields, Verlander, Paps, etc. already this year. We are deep enough to deal with that.
the problem with Lopez is that loogies suck, it’s stupid to give a roster spot to a man that’s only there to face one and maybe 2 batters in a game, give me a right hander with good stuff who can take out anyone and you take your loogy.
You are right, I think, that 7 RP’s are too few to have one dedicated to taking out a lefty, especially with this gruelling schedule. But if that role can be stretched to include taking on the next 3 – 6 batters, then that slot is as effective as any other, including long relief. It helps that, except for a bad game, Lopez is effective against righties. In other words, let him pitch and see what he can do. Use him as a loogy and keep him in.
