GAME NOTES:
Today's Game Notes come to you from our recent Trivia winner Joe who knew that Tony Armas was the Red Sox player to drive in 100 or more runs with an OBP below .300 (twice).
For the sixth time this season (already!) the Sox will ask their Ace‚Ѣ to rebound them from a defeat in their previous game. The Sox are 3-2 in these situations with Beckett starting in 2008 though one of the defeats was the 13 K performance in Tampa where he deserved a better fate. Unlike last night an early lead should be sufficient as Beckett is the Beckett of old. After a rough first outing he has posted an ERA under 3.00 and a WHIP under 1.00 in his last five starts highlighted by that rarity among Red Sox starters; pinpoint control.
Offensively the Sox will have to find a way to solve Jeremy Guthrie. In three career starts Guthrie has held the Sox to a 2.61 ERA. In very limited sample sizes only Dustin Pedroia (3 for 5) has had success with the Oriole hurler. The new Baltimore closer George Sherrill has 13 saves but also has a fairly high ERA and has walked a bunch so if that situation crops up the Sox could be in line for dramatic comeback tonight.

I mean, I leave thousands of miles from the U.S and i got to baseball 5 years ago but good gush, i think that a certain Sabathia won CY last year didn't he?
and you tell me those guys are gettin' paied for writtin'such kind of stuff ?

Don't get smart with me fuckstick.
I'm just as pissed. Hey and about that offense, there were the past few games where the offense refused to die but bad pitching cost us the game. That HR cost us the game and Beckett should be ashamed of himself. Manny's DP was a damn shame because of the quick reflexes of a pitcher.

I'm calm...a little frustrated but calm. I just don't like a smartass.
The Red Sox offense can still hit and the number we had tonight proves it. It's seriously that pitching. Wakefield, then Buch, now Becks. Bad pitching is ten times more painful to watch than bad hitting in my opinion, any day of the week.
At least the Yankees lost. I don't mind the Rays on top for right now.

Colin, hey, sorry - I didn't mean to tick you off, and I wasn't trying to make you look bad. I'm just as frustrated as you are, and if I hear Joe Castiglione use the word "squander" one more time I'll probably have an aneurysm. This team doesn't seem to be able to advance runners at all - the LOBs are killing us. It's like they get on base and unless their name starts with Jacoby and ends in Ellsbury, they can't move up at all and just wait for Youk to hit one out. It's horrific. There have been far too many situtations like tonight, though none as bad as the three on, none out waste. Yeah, pitching's been lame, too, and Beckett is of course responsible for this loss, but this offense should be a lot more productive, but for some reason it isn't, and that's what's driving me mad.
P.S. What on Earth is a f***stick?

It's ok. I hear your complaints. It could be worse though, we could be horribly inconsistent like the Yankees.
But we're not the Yankees. We're the Red Sox. We've been on top the AL East for a damn good reason and that reason is slipping unless the Beantown Boys calm down, strategize, and get their heads in the game, especially the pitching. LOBs we are notorious for and honestly it's a mixed bag depending on who the batter is. Manny's DP was just rotten luck.

The good and bad news is that this is not about just one guy having troubles. Each of our startng rotation, which is a good one, has had crappy outings this lingering road trip. They just haven't been quite right, and they will get it back quickly, and then it will be lights out. Let's hope Lester, Daisuke and Wake rebound now.
On the other hand, Aardsma, Hansen, Lopez, Oki are solid and getting better, and MDC and Timlin seem to be improving . . . Timlin last night, MDC tonite. No need to worry about Paps.
Hitting has been terrific. It's just a matter of time when the hits come together and the runs score, and the pitching gets back to normal. Those one run losses with failed 9th inning rallies are just not the Sox.
There is a new and surprising problem, though. Drew, Kielty, Moss are injured, and Coco has flu symptoms and Jacoby is still gimpy from 2 nites ago. Although Manny, Coco and Jacoby make a great OF, who backs them? What if Coco or Jacoby can't play? Lugo has played OF, and has speed, and is hitting pretty good. Carter is the best hitter in Pawtucket, and his defense isn't that bad. He actually gets a good jump on the ball. Van Avery is solid. Thurston is great D and decent bat. Each of them would do a good job, and deserves an opportunity. How quickly we go from deepest bench to new bench. Youk in RF is NOT an option. Here's another chance to get a boost from Pawtucket; or a role in which Julio can boost his reputation.
