BLOGPOLL: A.L. Awards 5/19

Each week, I will be participating in the 2008 MLB Blog Poll, put together by BaseballHappenings.com. Below are my current votes for the Most Valuable Player, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year awards. These votes will be tabulated among other votes from other blogs to create a running master list of voting as the year progresses. This week is the A.L. voting. Votes were asked to be turned in by the end of Monday.

MVP:

1. LF Carlos Quentin, CHW: The steal of the year? Quentin's 11 homers have him leading the league as the Pale House lead the A.L. Central.

2. 1B Justin Morneau, MIN: Minnesota remains in the hunt, and the offense of Morneau is a big reason why.

3. 1B Kevin Youkilis, BOS: Youk supplants Manny as the BoSox's hottest hitter as they retain the A.L.'s best record.

Cy Young:

1. SP Cliff Lee, CLE: A loss yesterday isn't enough to take the luster off his fast start --- not yet, anyways.

2. SP Daisuke Matsuzaka, BOS: A 7-0 record with a sterling 2.16 ERA has Dice-K as Boston's de facto ace.

3. SP Joe Saunders, LAA: The lefty has a 7-1 record and is quickly establishing the Angels' rotation as the league's best.

Rookie of the Year:

1. CF Jacoby Ellsbury, BOS: Girls swoon over him, fans root for his speed, he's the future in Boston and he's the sexy pick to be Rookie of the Year. What else does this guy need?

2. David Murphy, TEX: Traded for Eric Gagne, Murphy's combining with Milton Bradley and Josh Hamilton to keep Texas afloat.

3. SP Nick Blackburn, MIN: Sans Santana, Blackburn's contributions can't be ignored.

What do you think? Did I do a good job picking the award winners if the season was to end today?

What do you all think of Bard as a reliever?

He started the season in Single-A where he had an ERA of 0.64, a WHIP of 0.57 and 43 K's in 28 innings. Pitched his first Double-A inning yesterday and struck out every batter he faced.

I know his fastball sits 96-97, but how's his secondary stuff?

I'm with Zach. How is Josh Hamilton left off that MVP list through the first turn in the season? He leads the bigs with 50 RBIs, has 11 HRs along with Carlos and 12 doubles. His OBP is the lowest among Youk, Mauer and Quentin; but his SLG is the highest among the 4.

He hasn't been the hands-down favorite, but he should definitely be in the mix.

He's definitely in the mix... he was my No. 4. I debated Hamilton and Youkilis, but Youk's been scorching...

I like your picks. Its funny how quickly things can change though. Just a week ago CM Wang of the Yankees might have been on the Cy Young list.

One thing I really like about Youk is his ability to play several positions. It likely will not have much influence, but perhaps it should.

Kudos to that Hamilton kid in Texas. He has really turned his career around, what a hitter!

why no Josh Hamilton for MVP???

I don't think Dice-K deserves to be in there for Cy Young - he's gotten some lucky breaks thus far and managed to skate by with a lot of walks.

Carlos Gomez is making a pretty strong run at Ellsbury for ROY in the AL...
