Prev. Gm:

Boston Red Sox (32-23) @ Seattle Mariners 19-34)
Tim Wakefield (3-3, 5.19) @ Erik Bedard (3-3, 4.70)

10:05 PM EDT | Safeco Field (Seattle, WA)
TV: NESN RADIO: WRKO 680, SBN 1150

GAME NOTES:

Ok…which 3-3 pitcher would you rather have going for you tonight? Yeah…me too. I love Wake as much as the next guy, but he’s in a bit of a slide of late. With Daisuke’s early night last night, the Red Sox would love nothing more than a vintage Wakefield eight innings, three run type games tonight to ease the strain on the pen a bit.
The most important question of the night is….will this be the night Manny hits 500? Call an inning, number of outs, number of runners on in the comments and we’ll keep this a recurring game until Manny hits the milestone.
The old chat room link seems to have some issues…in the meantime you can chat in our Meebo room here. Just type your first message and it will prompt you for an alias.

Manny hits #500 leading off the 4th inning
(Actually, given his numbers against Bedard, I don’t think he’ll hit it tonight.)
    Speaking of numbers against Bedard…
    Pedroia: 1-for-9
    Papi: 5-for-22
    Manny: 4-for-20
    Lowell: 1-for-14
    Lugo: 8-for-30
I’m a tad worried about of offense tonight. Youk is 1-for-18 against Bedard lifetime so I guess it’s almost a good thing he’s not in there. But no Drew or Varitek (3-for-17) either.
    We need Good Wake tonight.

Coco-Cash-Lugo, was there any doubt Bedard would strike out the side?

Let’s hope the Celtics can win first. Secondly, can we get some run support for Wakefield.

94 pitches for Bedard through 6. Can we at least chase him next inning?
    Hold the line, Wake.

Celtics are pathetic. They don’t deserve a championship if they do this in the fourth. they better not lose this.

Well, they “won”. Still, don’t win by blowing a 15 point lead in the fourth, lordy.
..oh, there’s a sox game on?

    BUNT.
This is why I stopped watching road games.

Wait, I’m confused. What’s the point of having Drew pinch-hit, if Lugo can’t bunt him over anyway?
    Better steal second now, Julio.

He will not steal second. Ellsbury is going to have to hit a double here.

    P.S.
If the Red Sox lose this game I am making Morrow the Star of the Game. In back-to-back nights that has to be two of the best relief appearances from a middle relief pitcher that I have seen in a long time.

Wow…Dustin didn’t have a prayer of catching up to that one.
Papi-Manny-Lowell better get it done next inning. Make a putz out of their closer, fellas.
If Wake loses a CG here, he’ll be one pissed SOB.

I truly cannot believe Lowell popped that pitch up. Belt-high fastball? Pretty sure that’s what Trotter put into low-earth orbit for a grand slam in 05.

All I can say is, we better beat the living sh*t out of Baltimore this weekend. Thankfully, we’ve got a nine-game homestand after that.

Good game … frustrating as hell tho … the Mariners suck but they have the potential to be decent if they consistently pitched as well as theyre able … still we should have won this game … our offense is better than that … but all good teams have bad days I guess
I’ll echo DR and say we had completely destroy the O’s (especially offensively) … I know it’s cliche but we need to beat the teams we’re supposed to beat … or at least … we need to beat them more often

Great job Wake! Who would have predicted a pitching duel with Bedard? Can anyone translate what is wrong with Daisuke? Lowell is steady as a rock for this team. Manny would have caught that shallow fly tonight, with his golden glove. I was happy to see, unlike last night, pinch hitting and pinch running to try and win this one.
Yesterday, Evan referred us to Joy of Sox for an appropriate response to MR’s Letter to Julio. Julio did not cost us this game tonight, but at least 3 plays are relevant to this response. I am not surprised that Julio leads the league in hitting into DP’s, but wish a couple of other stats were available, like the # of Fielder’s Choices, # of Force Outs, and the # of times his DP’s, FC’s, FO’s, and E’s have ended rallies, ended innings, cost or lost us runs, cost us games; this year, It would be good to have this information to justify all the negativity surrounding his play on a team trying to repeat.

Gerry – that would be interesting to see. It does always feel that he is in the thick of things when it comes to innings ending or innings getting worse in regards to his defense. I just do not like him at all. I really want Jed Lowrie starting every day next year.

Agreed, and Jed Lowrie seems ready right now.
It’s not that Julio is terrible. He really isn’t, he has good skills and experience, and should trade well for at least a couple of prospects, if we eat some of the $$. His style, E’s, and at bats, though, are hurting a championship team. Eating some or all of Julio’s salary would be painful, but as Jed is making comparatively little, the SS Position itself would absorb it, which is acceptable for a good SS.
What would Lowrie offer? First of all, I don’t understand why the old negativities about his SS abilities are still hanging around. They have been debunked. He is not a Gonzales at defense, but he is a more complete player, providing a better total package to the position. Vs. Lugo, Lowrie offers a surer glove with better range = contributing to wins and the team’s and pitchers’ mental health. Less intrusion into the areas of 3rd base, 2nd base, LF and less Alpha behavior on a team which otherwise fits well together. Vs. Lugo and Gonzales, a proven, more consistent, better bat with some power, a .300BA, high OPS hitter in the 9th hole, and the same grinding down of pitchers of all Sox-trained players. Less drama. More productivity. I can understand the many reasons why this move hasn’t been made yet, but if the Sox are to win the division, it must be made soon.
