One mistake to Yuniesky Betancourt was all it took for the Seattle Mariners to take the series against the Boston Red Sox.
A solo home run from Betancourt in the bottom of the third inning made it 1-0 and that’s all that was needed in this one as Erik Bedard blanked the struggling Red Sox offense over seven innings of work.
Brandon Morrow pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the hold and J.J. Putz walked two in the ninth but completed the inning allowing no runs for his sixth save.
Star of the Game: I said it in the game posts
Morrow has been a shining example of what the Red Sox relief pitching needs to do: come into the game and dominate the opposition and do not allow runs.

Lugo is just frustrating. Everyone has one of these kids in their lives. They actually are somewhat good at what they do but never show it or are just smart and never show it. Lugo can play as we saw what he did for Tampa, but will that Julio Lugo ever show up here. His defense sucks though and I cannot argue positively about that here.
It is plain awful for a MLB player.
Agree on run support for Wake. Good thing he has been around the block and is used to these things. Good news is he can really pitch, and can be around for years. But like all knuckleballers, he seems to pitch well in certain ballfields and environments, like humid Safeco and in Domes.
So, if to allow Colon and Buchholz a spot in the rotation soon, Wake went to the Pen for long relief and spot starts, his starts could be limited to those ballparks where success is probable. And if his pitch doesn’t move in relief, he can be pulled quickly with minimal damage, unlike when he starts in a fixed rotation.
This rotation has proven it needs long relief (Good luck Julian), and is fragile enough to need a spot starter. Wake is the only one who has done this before. I bring this up here because this is a decision which will have to be made before ASB, assuming a healthy staff, so why not consider it now. (Becket, Matsuzaka, Lester, Colon, Buchholz . . . Wake)
Tough break for Wake tonight really. We need home pronto.
I will be headed up to Baltimore tomorrow night and at the game Saturday. Should be fun, I loved Camden the last time I was there, though Daisuke got his ass handed to him. Hopefully Lester will shut them down.
Gotta tip your hat to Bedard. Just one of those games.
Has anyone seen Lugo drive a single ball this year? I am not being a wise ass or just continuing the deserved piling on…I just was trying to think if he has even put any balls on the warning track, off the wall, etc. I really can’t think of a single occasion when he has put a charge into a ball or come close to hitting a homerun.
When he was with Tampa and had those good couple years I remember the ball would explode of his bat for a wiry guy.
