You must be right about Zinc on the Sox radar. Unless everyone who has seen him is dead wrong, he will be able to perform Masterson-like at Fenway, while driving the visiting team nuts. Imagine two knuckleballers on the same roster. Will we need 3 catchers to prevent PTSD? Is he our 9th starting pitcher? Barring mishaps, do you think he should come up 9/1?
By my count, 10 MLB ready pitchers could visit Fenway from Pawtucket this year: Buchholz, Masterson, Zinc, Pauley, MDC, Hansen, Bowden, Smith, Bard, Jones, and still have a loaded rotation and pen in Pawtucket. What a feat.
No love for Bowden?
He’s two years younger than Buchholz or Masterson and he’s been lights out at Portland. 2.30 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 72 strikeouts in 74 innings. His peripherals look like Buchholz and Hughes when they were at Double-A. And the kid’s still only 21.
FM: He’s great, but he’s not going to see the majors this year. Zink’s turning in a great year, and I’m glad to see Kottaras getting experience in catching a knuckleballer, but dude needs to bust outta his slump.
The guys performance i have been psyched about is Luis Exposito in Greenville. A catcher with great defensive tools, he has 11 home runs in 177 ab’s and a .865 ops.
I can’t tell you how nice it is to have this many young pitchers moving up through the system. It’s a “problem” any organization would love to have.
As for Zink, he’s right on schedule. Tim Wakefield had his first good season at age 28, and he didn’t really become consistent until his early 30s. Zink could still have a good 15-year run in his future. Well, maybe ten.
How can Zink help the big club? Would they consider him as the long man? It’s hard to picture another team trading anything for a minor league knuckleballer.
