Mike Timlin released...err...DL'd
We've been speculating for a long time about the future of Mike Timlin with this team given his performance and today the Red Sox "phantom injury department" drummed up another to keep Mike Timlin from suffering the humiliation of being released. Timlin will go on the 15 day DL making roster space for the returning Daisuke Matsuzaka. This also means that Chris Smith will get a reprieve from the short trip back to Pawtucket.
Just to be clear...I don't doubt that something is ailing Timlin. He hasn't been right all season. But I also think that the timing of the DL stint is as much "injury related" as "performance related".

He is seriously going to get dunzoed soon and I will hate it being his biggest fan, but could not disagree with it if it happened.

Hey he was horrible first half last year and money the second. Velo and mvmt are there, commands not. Don't count him out.

I agree with Evan. He pitched some really good innings, but was obviously having issues (physical?), and can use Pawtucket to get ready for the second half. Mike Timlin has been integral to this team for a long time, is a tough guy, has mentored half the kids in the pen, and will be back with control at the right time and ride off into the sunset with his boots on when he is done.

Riding off into the sunset should have happened after the '07 world series title. This is just another classic case of a player sticking around long after the bell has rung. Timlin has given us great innings in his career as a Sox but he's going to go out like Schilling now. Hurt for a while, attempting to make a comeback but gets shut down for good.
Just walk away.

Mike's deserved a longer leash due to his second half track record and enhanced stint with the Red Sox, but the man clearly has nothing left. It's sad because he's one of my favorites, but at some point you must cut the cord when he can't get major league hitters out anymore
Good run, Mikey.

Chris Smith has been great in AAA. I'm looking forward to seeing his performance in Boston.

As long as at least one of Aardsma or Hansen is pitching well, Mike can bide his time. If we can squeeze something out of him in the second half, it's gravy. It's been a great run, but I get the feeling it's over.

Mike's extra-sized lady hasn't sung yet. He was more inconsistent than bad this year. I think it will be over when Mike think's its over, which could be now or October.
