Prev. Gm:

Baltimore Orioles (44-46) @ Boston Red Sox (55-39)
Brian Burres (6-5, 5.07) @ Clay Buchholz (2-3, 5.53)

7:05 PM EDT | Fenway Park (Boston, MA)
TV: NESN RADIO: WRKO 680, SBN 1150

GAME NOTES: The Red Sox round out the pre-All Star break first half (not truly the halfway point, but whatever) with another visit from the Baltimore Orioles. Clay Buchholz makes his much-anticipated return to the mound against the team he threw a no-no against last September, and while he struggled with a 5.53 ERA in the rotation at the beginning of the year, he was outstanding at Fenway Park: 1.04 ERA, 2-0, .226 BAA. He’s earned his way back into the rotation with 43 K in 43.2 IP at Pawtucket including a 2.47 ERA. Opposing the Red Sox is Brian Burres, who has a 1.56 WHIP and 5.07 ERA. Win.

Kind of a slow day around here huh? Hopefully Buchholz has command of the fastball tonight, the good news is he’s always had success against Baltimore.

Ew. Buchholz is already leaving a nasty taste in my mouth.
Let’s hope our offense is rested and he can get some control.

That out call at first on Lugo was one of the worst missed calls I’ve seen in years. Got the run in though.

Well that was a fantastic start by Buch … just what we were hoping from him … 5 innings, 4 runs, and 108 pitches … great … I’d be interested to know just how many fastballs Clay threw tonight
Offense … step right up … it’s your turn

    Colin-
Prior to today he was throwing his fastball 47.25% of the time. If I counted correctly he threw 66 of 107 pitches as fastballs. 61% give or take. Remy commented that his best innings were the ones where he threw the fewest fastballs.

Wow I think Terry needs to sit down with MDC and be like this:
“Manny…it’s been a great first year with you and you accomplished your dream of getting a ring with us. However, you suck now and you have your ring so basically GTFO.”

DOWN GOES LUGO! DOWN GOES LUGO!
Regardless of the score, that’s a HUGE victory for the Red Sox. I hope he’s out for a good long time.

Oh and just a note … please do not misunderstand, we here at Fire Brand would never actually root for any major league ballplayer to get injured … that would be dispicable and we hold ourselves to a higher standard
That being said … Julio Lugo is not a major league ballplayer

I’m on record with my displeasure with Lugo. I didn’t see the play and even then would have no idea how serious an injury it is, but I will never root for someone to get injured. Okay, maybe sometimes, but I don’t mean it.

I hope he’s fine and the decision to bring Lowrie up for a starting role is based entirely on the skills they both have. A decision that should have been made a month ago.

Well…I was hoping to see a win, but the Rays and Yanks lost too, so I guess I’ll take a good game.
I must confess that I bought myself a Pedroia t-shirt before the game, and I’m convinced that’s what broke his hit streak. Though it was great of Dustin to take that walk in the 9th instead of being selfish and trying to hit a bad pitch.
That said, I do take full credit for getting Lugo hurt. Me being at Fenway is what did it, trust me. :-)

I never root for someone to get hurt simply because baseball is their livelihood and its just kinda callous to root for physical injury. That said, if Lowrie is called up, it could provide a real boost to the team so I’m a little conflicted.

lol of course none of us really want Lugo to actually get injured as a person whose just doing his job … but as the man so undeservingly holding the starting shortstop position from our beloved and emerging Jed Lowrie … we just don’t mind it so much when hes gotta take a few days off … understandable
