Seems a bit of a stretch to make the 9th inning the goat of the game when the Sox lost by 4. Buchholz is fresh up from the minors and it may not be fair to criticize him overmuch, he was clearly the single biggest contributor to the loss. He allowed four runs and ran up his pitch count, which put a greater burden on the bullpen. If you want to name a goat for this game, it’s obviously Buchholz.
How about DelCarmen, the game was 4-3 when he came in, and the suddenly it’s 6-3 and we are out of it.
The correct phrase is “all for naught” (”nought” is also correct as a variant) rather than “all for not.” “Naught” means “nothing,” so it is another way of saying that something was all for nothing.
I enjoy your Red Sox musings. Please excuse the correction.
