The Red Sox today signed shortstop Casey Kelly from Sarasota, Florida. He was the 30th overall pick in the amateur draft and profiles as both a hitter and a pitcher, the latter of which the Sox prefer Kelly become.
Assigned to the Rookie Gulf Coast League Red Sox, the speculation occurring to Rotoworld.com is that he will play shortstop and then convert to the mound in the instructional league in October.

It seemed for a while we would lose him to football. Casey Kelly’s signing shows the Sox are still in building mode, reloading the system, and not about to let the farm lay fallow. With so many top prospects quickly moving up and out of AA-AAA, infusion of new top talent is a must (which is why I think we would do well to emulate BB and trade Julio and others now, for promising young prospects, and eat the money). IMO, this is an important signing, symbolically as well as practically.
I grew up in Western Mass and have lived in Miami for past 20 plus years and I’ve been a Bosox fan all of my life (used to pay a 1.25 to sit in right). I’m a teacher and a baseball coach and we played against Sarasota in the State tournament in Casey’s junior year and like Alex Rodriquez ( he destroyed us in 92′) when he was in high school it was obvious you were looking at a future major league ball player. He hit an opposite field bomb off the foul pole ( it was called foul by the way) with a flick of his wrist. The kid can play. It’s a good day!
