7/25: It's On
| Prev. Gm:
|
New York Yankees (56-45) @ Boston Red Sox (60-43)
Joba Chamberlain (2-3, 2.52) @ Josh Beckett (9-6, 3.98) 7:05 PM EDT | Fenway Park (Boston, MA) TV: NESN RADIO: WRKO 680, SBN 1150 |
GAME NOTES: Nothing beats Red Sox vs. Yankees in sports. Tonight is the first of three at Fenway Park between the first place Sox and the third place Yankees, trailing by just three games in the division and riding an impressive winning streak. Joba Chamberlain, who's excelled greatly in his new starting role with a 2.52 ERA, will toe the rubber against Josh Beckett, looking to make a statement against our hated rival. Joba has never started at Fenway Park, while Beckett has struggled with the Yankees in his career overall. Manny is out tonight with a sore knee, but Papi is finally back. Coco Crisp replaces Manny in the lineup.

Beckett has struggled in his career against the Yankees overall except in the 2003 World Series!

I think it might be a good idea if Beckett could get out of this inning.

Hey folks - these series are always just so much fun. Zach, you got it right nothing beats Sox vs Yanks! And it always seems to get better as the season progresses.
Man, the late season is gonna be off the hook, assuming the contenders all hang. Sox in the Bronx late Aug., both of us home and away with the Rays early Sept., and season ending in Fenway. Sweet! I'll be at a bar owned by my Sox fan friend out here in the OC. Have a great and safe night all.

Thanks for the well wishes lala, here's hoping for some good baseball. Nice catch Melky.

That was some nice defense there Yanks. Beckett needs to pitch a gem.

Yanks got Marte and Nady? hmmm....http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/07/nady-pulled-fro.html

This is Even-Numbered-Year Beckett. He doesn't do "gems."

I'm just gonna start spelling his name this way: variteK

the pirates sent Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte to the yankees for a bunch of crap, i can't believe this.
#15
Posted by JaredK, July 25, 2008 8:24 PM
I can't believe the Pirates didn't get Austin Jackson. Tabata's star has fallen and apparently has some attitude issues but he is still very young for double-a and may be very good...either way they should have gotten Austin Jackson or kennedy.

If Manny plays he'll be a better "addition" to the lineup than Nady and Marte?? WE GOT MONSTERSON!
#18
Posted by Jc, July 25, 2008 8:27 PM
i would have loved to do that deal, move Drew to center, Nady in right, coco the 4th outfielder and Ellsbury to AAA
we could have toped the yanks offer easily.
#19
Posted by Bob, July 25, 2008 8:32 PM
why would you move Ellsbury to AAA and keep Coco, at least Ellsbury has some value, Coco is pretty much useless.
#20
Posted by Bob, July 25, 2008 8:33 PM
why can't we hit Chamberlain? Cause he's good, and we can't beat good pitchers.
#21
Posted by Jc, July 25, 2008 8:35 PM
but he is earning the big bucks and his defense is better than Ellsbury, and Ellsbury can't stay in the bench, he needs at bats to develop, but that won't happen, cause Nady is on the yanks, i guess we'll have to spent the rest of the season with a black hole offensively in CF.

Ellsbury might try to walk his way on and quit swinging at first pitches. He's got a weak swing and just chops at the ball most of the time. He looks confused and lacking of confidence at the plate. Maybe he's trying to hard. Whatever it is, he needs to turn it around or the Sox are gonna be in trouble.
#24
Posted by Jc, July 25, 2008 8:42 PM
Tek, Coco and Ellsbury are pathetic, can't we just call them out automatically so we don't have to watch them hit?
#25
Posted by Colin, July 25, 2008 8:47 PM
Let's rearrange that lineup for tomorrow how about that Tito? Jesus it's painful to watch sometimes.
EFFORT GUYS!

Lineup was rearrange, until Manny decided he needed a 3rd day off
#27
Posted by jim c, July 25, 2008 8:58 PM
time to make a move here with top of the line up coming up.. Come on Jacoby, let's get a hit or walk!

Joba is pitching a heck of a game. We need to give Beckett some support but that is looking unlikely unless they pull JC.
#31
Posted by Bob, July 25, 2008 9:20 PM
why is youk swinging at 3-0 pitches? To run up the pitch count? That was ball 4
#32
Posted by Mostly Running., July 25, 2008 9:22 PM
It was 2-1 bob.
Someone needs to get a bat in Joba's hand and a pitch at his f*n head.
#35
Posted by Jc, July 25, 2008 9:25 PM
Javier Lopez? when was the last time he pitched? this could get ugly.
#36
Posted by Mostly Running., July 25, 2008 9:27 PM
The ball at Youk's head was a foul ball but everyone thought it was ball 3. Announcers didn't catch it til later either.

Delcarmen, looks like his wrist was hurting after he stroke out arod.

is Casey death or something? why is he not pinch hitting for Tek?
#50
Posted by Bob, July 25, 2008 9:55 PM
don't know how much longer I can defend Jacoby. Better luck tommorow I guess.
#51
Posted by Colin, July 25, 2008 9:56 PM
Wow guys...I don't think this one is ours.
Quite frankly I'm surprised it's still been 1-0. I can only hope our big hitters do something and not swing like idiots.
Ellsbury = disappointment
#54
Posted by Steven Roth, July 25, 2008 9:57 PM
If Casey had hit for Ellsbury, you could put Youk in LF, Casey at 1B....bet Francona didn't think of that!
#56
Posted by Jc, July 25, 2008 10:01 PM
umh, you're right, i forgot about Youks, stupid decision by tito, i know he likes to show confidence in his players and all but this is just pathetic, these are the must win games of the season, do or die, u can't lose them because of that shit.
#57
Posted by Mostly Running., July 25, 2008 10:03 PM
Seriously? You guys are going to shit on Jacoby after every man woman and child had a boner for him until two months ago? Yeah, he is really struggling right now but the team is still winning games, he's playing great defense and he might just go all Dusty on our asses in a day or two.
Let him play, move him down in the lineup, but let him play. Otherwise Sean O was right and we never enjoy the consequences of that.

Posted by Colin, July 25, 2008 10:13 PM
That was so painful to watch. Fuck that HP umpire. His strike zone was like Stretch Armstrong's arms. Fucking ridiculous.
#60
Posted by Steven Roth, July 25, 2008 10:21 PM
This just wasn't our night. Instead of having Wake pitch, let's bring up the guy from the "Bull Durham" movie and let him throw some wild pitches in the direction of Joba and that shitty ass ump

i think we all have been patient with jacoby but we cant wait forever. he needs to step his game up now or he should go where all big leaguers go when they cant hit. the braves sent francouer down to try gain him some confidence. I dont think this guy is ready for big league pitching yet. i hope he proves me wrong tomorrow.

When teams make a Trade with the Yankees why does it feel like other teams will take the Yankees Shit but when Teams talk Trade with the Red Sox they want Top Prospects?
#63
Posted by Sean O, July 25, 2008 10:54 PM
I like Ellsbury, so I'm not upset at his, uh, current problems. I say we just move him down in the order and give Coco some more ABs.
It's unfortunate that we didn't trade him when his value was so high, but that's in the past. I just hope Theo does something to help this team before the deadline.

What I really hope is for the Red Sox to be thirsting for revenge.
I'll take 4 GB now...

Shouldve had manny pitch-hit for tek in the 8th... wouldve made rivera throw 2 more pitches at least.
What a feeble effort.
Bullpen looked sharp though..

I'm no expert by any means but Ellsbury seems to shift his weight to soon before the bat is even starting to come through the zone. He is a pretty strong/wiry guy and even when he is going good he just does not seem to square up on the ball and when he does his balance is seems to be out of whack with his bat coming through the zone. He does make some of the most consistently weak contact...even when he is going good. I still think he will be a very good player but I wonder if his swing works against him a bit or if he still just needs to find his timing within it. Again, not a mechanics guru, just an observation.

why is Ellsbury becoming the goat of the Red Sox? He is killing us????? Absurd in the extreme. Let's see, who has had major slumps this year? Oh, yeah! Papi, Pedroia, Manny, Mike, Coco, Lugo, Veritek, JD, Cora, Cash. Yep, so it's the rookie with 35SB, tons of runs and a great glove who is killing us. There were ony 3 hits off Joba tonite. Why didn't Ellsbury bunt? Why didn't Coco bunt? Or Pedroia or Lowrie? Why didn't anyone pinch hit for Tek? Where's Manny? What about the absolutely crappy calls against Lowell, Jacoby, JD, Youk??? Losing this was a team effort.
On the other hand, Becket pitched well, Oki, Lopez and MDC were excellent again. Lowrie's bat, arm, glove and range continue to exceed expectations. I imagine when he makes his first E, someone will yell "See, he's not a SS."

gerry, you make it sound like we can't criticize anyone on this team. Did you not hear the kvetching about Varitek from May onwards?
Bottom line is, Ellsbury has hit .245 .265 .327 .591 in June and .244 .279 .280 in July. If he starts off August the same way, I'm afraid we need to use one of his options.

I'm a Yankees fan.... just perusing.
1. Ellsbury is going to be anywhere between a one-time All-Star or multiple All-Star. He has so much speed and his defense is top notch. He's hit before, the hitting will come.
2. I don't know what it is between Youk and Joba? Why would Joba even think of throwing at him last year... nevermind tonight in a 1-0 game?!?! Joba just seems like such a nice guy. He obviously has the guts to pitch inside, but doesn't have the "headhunting" mentality of a Pedro or Clemens.
Whatever it is, I don't want to see it again. I'm sure the Yankees don't either. I hope Girardi takes Chamberlain aside and tells him whatever message he's trying to send... he's sent it. His performance tonight should speak for itself.
3. There will be retaliation. Probably not tomorrow. I don't see a knuckleball going at someone's head. But sometime this series.
4. The Yankees beat the Sox tonight. But we prison-raped the Pirates!

I could say a lackluster offense was the goat of this game, but Foster Fuckface the HP Umpire was without a doubt the goat times five.
#72
Posted by AndrewYF, July 26, 2008 12:32 AM
Foster's pitch calling was horrendous, but he was consistently calling those strikes all game against both opponents.

per rob bradford from the herald:
"I will leave you with this tonight … There are strong indications that if Manny Ramirez shows up at the park Saturday and pronounces himself unfit to play, the team will issue disciplinary actions which could include a suspension. Just in case you’re wondering, the clubhouse opens to the media at 12:25 p.m., although Ramirez typically shows up well before that."
