Jon Lester has come up big in his last two starts with wins that we needed.

I started off ST claiming we need to replace Schilling and Santana, Gagne, and Julio. That is still true.
This may be premature, but IMO Lester is quickly growing into Santana’s anticipated role. Colon & Masterson take care of Schill (10-12 wins between them). At SS, Lowrie is showing better glove, arm, range and bat than critics expected. If he doesn’t lose his rookie status this year, he will be a ROY candidate next year. He is a keeper. Two problems solved.
The question remains, how do we replace Gagne? Theo wants to build internally, but Gronk is DL, Jones isn’t ready, Smith wasn’t given much of a shot. I see several solutions in the mold of young Jedi Masterson. They are:
    1. When Colon is healthy, either he or Buchholz go to the Pen through October, the other to the Rotation.
    2. Charlie Zinc or David Pauley to the Pen. Both are leading the league in pitching, and bringing Pawtucket a championship. Both are trade bait, as they are blocked and would do well on many MLB rosters right now. Cash can catch Zinc, resting Tek. Pauley can be unhittable for 2 -3 innings, and could do the same out of the Pen.
This would allow Hansen to get command of his incredible arsenal at Pawtucket, knowing exactly what he needs to do to come up 9/1 or next year.

I’m not going to disagree with you about possibly throwing Clay in the pen, but the idea of Colon filling (more than amply) that role would not be fun to watch. Getting him ready in a pinch would be like watching an 18 wheeler carrying a double trailer of mercury accelerate from a dead stop.
Kind of like a u-haul cornering around second.
