Prev. Gm:

Los Angeles Angels (66-40) @ Boston Red Sox (61-47)
Joe Saunders (13-5, 3.10) @ Josh Beckett (9-7, 3.83)

7:05 PM EDT | Fenway Park (Boston, MA)
TV: NESN RADIO: WRKO 680, SBN 1150

GAME NOTES: This is the third time in four series the Red Sox are looking to dodge a sweep in the final game: they were able to blow out Sidney Ponson and the Yankees Sunday, but lost to the Angels the week prior. The Angels are boasting with confidence following their Mark Teixeira acquisition and nearly no-hitting the flat Red Sox last night. Will Manny Ramirez play tonight? He’s in the lineup, but a source talking to Sean McAdam says a deal may be consummated soon. Will he go to the Marlins for Hermida? Dodgers or Phillies? Beckett looks to play stopper and defeat 13-game winner Joe Saunders.

Dear Lord. Usually, it’s twice as many LOBs as runs. Tonight it’s twice as many errors as runs.

If we can get Tucker out of Florida I would be estatic. Hermida is potential JD Drew right down to the walks, 20-30 homerun potential, left handedness and injuries…but I’d take him and Tucker and not look back.
Doesn’t Manny realize that if someone is giving you 160 million dollars to place baseball that no one gives a shit about your “mental peace”.

We play a bad for less than two weeks and suddenly we’re not a playoff team? You guys are priceless. You must not have been fans of the team before 2004 because you have no faith at all. We’re not going to have the best record in baseball the entire season every year. But we’re still a playoff team.

Not sure if this has anything to do with anything, but Mike Jacobs was just pulled from the Marlins/Mets game.

Au contraire, monsieur Running. I’ve been a Sox fan for 40 years, and I’ve seen them collapse many times in the past. I’d like to believe you’re right, but there are, after tonight, only 53 games left, and the Sox will need to win 34 of them just to get to 95 wins and the *possibility* of the wild card. Does this look like a team poised to go on a .641 tear?

Leadoff double, and the runner only gets as far as third because of a wild pitch. Disgusting.

Sorry FM, I’ve been a Sox fan since the early nineties as a kid and right now I don’t really see any big things happening with the Sox. Right now the Rays and Angels clearly have better teams, otherwise we’d be on a tear like in 2007. We’re making no moves with trades since some of the Sox management thinks that our team is solid when it’s not right now.
I think if Boston can pull its act right then we could possibly take the AL East. Otherwise we’ll have to shoot for Wild Card.

Tessie, we’d need to win 34 of those games and the Yankees would need to win 35. What’s your point? We’re playing our worst baseball of the year and we still have a playoff spot, don’t we? We’re 26th in offense since the All-Star break. Soon our offense will revert back to one of the top 3 offenses in baseball and we’ll be fine.
Colin, I said we’re a playoff team. I didn’t predict what will happen in the playoffs. No one can do that.

BP’s Will Carroll reports that a deal has been sent to the Commissioner’s office, and all that stands in the way is Manny’s and league approval.
Sox get: Bay and John Grabow
Marlins get: Manny, prospect (Sox), and cash
Pirates get: Hermida, 3 prospects (2 Marlins, 1 Sox)

according to olney the sticking point in the 3 team Manny talks is the Marlins want a prospect in addition to Ramirez, obviously they can’t expect someone huge, maybe they’ll take Bard? The Sox would get Bay and Grabow from the Pirates and hopefully keep one of the Marlins players.

guess I’m a little behind on things. I’m cool with that deal with one caveat, the prospects better not be anderson and bowden, we’re already giving up Manny freakin Ramirez

I’m not going to give up on the Sox, but being a realist I also understand the trends the Sox want to run by cannot continue.

Tessie, I haven’t seen anything from the team lately that indicates their a playoff team either. But I’ll trust the 97 game sample size I saw earlier over the small sample size we’ve seen since the All-Star break. There’s just no way the Red Sox remain 26th in the league in offense after the All-Star game after being the second best offensive team in the league all year, without Ortiz for much of that.

Again, FM, I hope you’re right, but we’re getting Ortiz back just as they unload Manny. Who they get for him may make a BIG difference, but this is a team with a history of second half declines, whereas the Yankees seem to always pick it up in the second half, and right now there’s only one game separating the two. I am not optimistic. (As if you couldn’t tell.)

Obviously our current predicament is quite deep … but at the same time … the solution is simple … I still say this team has the potential to dominate … they just have to do it … play hard … leave it all on the field every night … pitch sharply … in other words … WIN … simple enough right?
Manny leaving Boston scares me … I dunno why … it just does … he’s been the center piece of our offense for as long as I’ve been a Red Sox fan … I just don’t know how well we are gonna do without him … I guess we’ll see because the bridges are apparently being burnt as I speak … It’s gonna be interesting … but again … regardless of who hits 4th … JUST WIN

Gammons is still saying the deal is unlikely.
If he does leave, it sucks, but I think Bay could reasonably duplicate his production. Remember Nomar was the centerpiece of our offense for a long time too, we got by fine after trading him

Yeah … I’m sure we would still be a good offensive team … I’m just not excited about Bay … I know he’ll be solid … but he’s not Manny … the deal depends on the prospects to me … we get a good pitching or catching prospect and it helps … but Manny is just a rental so I doubt that’s gonna happen … we’ll see
Oh and I just read the whole “mental peace” quote by Manny from today … Wow … damn Manny … if the Sox are really trying to “turn the fans against you” as you’re claiming … they aren’t gonna have to do much when you make comments like that … screw your “mental peace” … What happened to winning huh?
    Crazy times in the Nation…

nothings getting done until tommorow if ever it looks like. I’m cool with keeping Manny, but I’ll support the team if he’s traded, I just wish it didn’t have to come to this…
I mentioned Shoppach a couple of days ago, why did we have to trade him again?

Manny’s “we are not worthy of him” today is the icing, and I finally jumped off the fence. Hermida or Bay would be great additions. If they deliver 60% of Manny’s trying hard offensive output (and he won’t try hard if he stays, so they would be comparable), play better D, actually run the bases, and get the focus off Manny and onto the game . . . we win. Several players will be sad for awhile (Papi, Julio) and the games will be more somber, but if these changes energize this lineup, this rotation, this pen, this group of exceptional professionals, we win. Just do it, Theo.

I actually see Ortiz going a few minutes after Manny. Didn’t happen with Pedro, but for all of my hate of “chemistry,” I can’t see Papi wanting to stick around if Manny goes.
