I’m going to yield to someone that knows better than me when it comes to this trade. After reading this:
    http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/sox_therapy/discussion/magnum_opus/
i’ve decided that i’m fine with this trade. Darren makes a compelling argument and he doesn’t even account for the salary next year.

Once again, he ignores the NL->AL switch, which should eliminate any value that Bay had. Going to a major league is huge, even with the green monster.

If anyone cares it’s 10-2 now in the Bronx. LA is pu**y-whipping NY right now.
Looks like there’s a new bully in town.

So much for that vaunted Yankee pitching. Sure feels to me like the Angels are about to rip the whole league a new one.

while i will miss manny, i actually like this deal considering the position that theo and company were in from the get go.
in my opinion, every team walked away with some level of success with this deal.
the sox walk away looking pretty decent by getting a solid replacement for manny, who would have walked after this year anyway. there was no way we were going to re-sign him and it was pretty apparent that something needed to be done chemistry-wise, imho. as for the other parts, we give up a guy who i don’t think would have ever realized his potential in beantown but may very well do a lot better in a lower-key town (hansen) and a AAAA oufielder who may do pretty well in pittsburgh but there are a lot of outfielders out there like him (moss).
as for the dodgers, giving up laroche and a minor leaguer for manny seems like a really good deal. it just looked like laroche needed a change of scenery, too.
there is a lot of disagreement about the pirates haul but i, for one, think they did a decent job. they got a solid 3b prospect in laroche who could benefit even more playing with his brother…an apparently really good minor leaguer from the dodgers…a guy who could be a solid reliever in a different setting in hansen and a replacement for bay in moss.
all things considered, i think it’s a solid deal for everyone involved. and, like has already been mentioned, we already have our left field spot filled for next year in bay while freeing up even more money to make a run at free agents in the offseason.

Sean O…I still think you’re overplaying the NL to AL switch. I’ve seen no analysis that shows that NL hitters do any worse when they go to the AL. If anything its more of a pitcher problem because of the deeper line ups. Just thinking of the better players to switch leagues lately. Miguel Cabrera is up around 290 with 20 hrs and 80 rbi. Vlad in his first year in Anaheim hit 330 with 36 hrs and 125 rbi.
All the scouting reports say that Bay has a quick bat that should adjust to this pitching quite seamlessly. Personally I’m going to trust the scouts on this one instead of gut instinct until I see statistics that maybe show otherwise.
Evan or Tim…wanna do a post on the NL to AL difference? maybe you’ll find something interesting.

I disagree that we have the left field spot set for next year. If you go by PECOTA’s future forecasts, that had Bay still playing in AAA, we’re looking at .259 .357 .490 and declining. Knock off .2 for OBP and SLG, and you get a below average player with a below average glove.
I’d say the only way we have a chance at a World Series in the next 5 years is to flip Bay this offseason before people catch on. Maybe we can get some prospects or use him as part of a trade for a real left fielder.
We had better not try to get CC Sabathia with the money we’re “saving” here as well. We need power, not an overrated obese pitcher. Maybe Buchholz will have learned how to pitch by 2009, and he can take over.

Sean, your point about switching leagues is valid. I wanted to keep Manny right up to his “the Sox don’t deserve me” remark, which was yesterday. He went from being child-like to child-ish.
Bay is a legitmate hitter who may not do as well in the AL. A few series at home will determine this. He might be less even than Manny goofing off, but he could be more than Manny goofing off, which would be a plus. If Manny stayed, he would have dogged it, and continued to drag his team and team mates down. So, if Bay is even a goof-off Manny equivalent, he will improve the team.
By the same token, Hansen could rock in the NL, and Moss, with no options left, has finally been freed. We will also see if he is indeed better than Dave Murphy (my belief) or even exceed Bay’s #’s. IMO, he has always been more than a 4th OF, and am looking forward to his success. The good news is that Carter, Bailey, Van Every are all MLB ready 25 – 35HR power hitters who will replace Moss. We don’t need to wait for Reddick or Kalik. These 3 are dominating the IL.

I got so intrigued with reading all your comments that I forgot something IMO important:
We just paid $7M, Manny, Moss and Hansen for Jason Bay. Why? Because Manny was relentlessly and selfishly taking this world championship team out of contention. It didn’t happen quickly. Manny has been unreliable for months, alternating between brilliant all out effort and ‘don’t give a damn’ level of play. We excused Manny not being Manny because of injuries, hamstrings, not having Papi, gradual decline, age, etc. It was just Manny deciding he didn’t want to play anymore. This has been building. And don’t forget his behavior with the traveling secretary, Youk, not chasing balls and not running to first. His star sets alot lower now.
I hope we don’t burden Jason Bay with this . . . he had nothing to do with it, and is the best we could get from outside to replace Manny and, unlike Manny, he will do his best, which is probably more than enough to make a difference. If we welcome him and support him as he learns a new team, new ballpark, new fans, new league.

Sean why do you think CC is overrated? I’ll withold judgement until all is said and done. There was a good article on espn about trades that people initially proclaimed wins for one team and turned into losses. I will also add that PECOTA relies a great deal on the previous year, 2007 really looks like a statistical outlier on Bay’s career path, he’s had an excellent year so far and it isn’t even his contract year.

Ok, I am looking for some advice from anyone who ever lived in the Boston/Brookline area. I am moving to Brookline in two weeks and I need to know how good the transit system is. I haver heard good general things, but need some specifics, because my buying a car depends on whether it is neccesary (my wife needs a car, the question is if we need a second). How extensive is the transit system, how safe/clean, and how reliable? I would need to take it to school daily, so I need something that runs fairly often, is reliable in terms of schedule, and isnt always dirty, stuffy, and unsafe like the NYC subway system. So , can anyone help me?

Okay … sorry if this goes a little long … but I must respnd to all the talk concerning this trade (and other things) … too much of which has been done by Faiaz … but that’s beside the point … I think we are all losing a little focus amidst the hype (panic?) of trading away the (former) greatest right handed hitter of our generation … Only one queston matters to me … we need to focus on it now … What are we trying to do this season? What is our goal? Winning right? Winning another world championship right?
Manny is no longer being Manny … sure his idiotic off the field antics have been raised to a new level lately … but he is no longer the consistently driven masher he once was … his good play on the field was finally swallowed up by his … well … Manny-ness … if you think he was gonna rachet it up and preform like the Manny of old down the stretch you’re lying to yourself … he’s just not the player he once was … his heart wasn’t in it … and the only thing that is gonna save this team right now is heart…
Now, while I’m not necessarily thrilled about this trade … Jason Bay … meh … I think it was time to make this move … we are 4-8 since the ASB and this team needs to wake up now … Manny’s apparent focus on his own “mental peace” and his lack of focus on winning wasn’t helping … it was time for him to go … I think free of that distraction … free of the apathy that Manny was bringing every night … I think this team has a chance to turn it around … We still have a fantastic pitching staff and offense … sure the bullpen is the question mark but they need to suck it up and start preforming … just like everyone … if they don’t … well … we’d be screwed with or without Manny …
Look … I just think we need to stop panicking … stop worrying about what Theo is doing … stop acting like the season just went down the drain … just stop giving up already dammit … believe in this team … we can win … we just have to go out and win … it’s as simple as that…
    Just win.

I think the greatest value of this trade is that the relic of a red headed step child finally has an all white outfield, all white infield save for Cora, Lugo and maybe Lowell if you squint, and a mostly white starting pitching crew. Hopefully this means the D to the S never writes another word again and the team can just field the best available players without worrying about his run them out of town bullshit.
I’m just hoping Shaughnessy doesn’t get a hair about the Canadian dollar being too strong or go on some anti-Semitic jag after S&S cuts him when he grabs a waitresses ass after he’s pounded too many Heinekins.

Colin, thanks a lot. My wife is currently not working anywhere, but she is looking and needs a car for various other things. I will be living on Beacon and will be attending Harvard Law. It sounds like you think a second car is really unnecessary.

david – while you are quite correct that arod is a dipshit, i do not remember him talking shit to the yankees fo, holding signs that say trade me fighting with teammates on camera or obviously quittingthe team onthe field. am i right that arod, with all his maddonnaesque baggage, has never dospalyed any of this? alsom ill bet bay can deliver better tha arod in the clutch anyway, since you introduced the comparison.

Moshe, I also need to ask you a few questions:
    1. Where does your wife work?
    2. Where are you going to school?
    3. Where in Brookline are you living?
What I can tell you is that you will most likely be taking the Green Line into Boston. The Green Line is perhaps the nicest of the five (Blue, Silver, Red, Green, and Orange) and the cleanest. Also, you can’t find a safer line than the Green. All the bad shit you might hear about would be on the Red/Orange Lines late at night. Brookline has the luxury of having the C and D line run through it so you at least have an option.
A monthly T Pass runs you about $59 a month and gives you unlimited access to any line, but I will warn you once you use it there’s a 22-minute recharge rate so you can’t pass it off to your buddy right after you get through the gate. In terms of reliability the Green Line is a hit or miss. Sometimes it’s right on time and not too crowded, other times you’re waiting 10+ minutes for one. Also with Red Sox games sometimes it can get a little crowded since the Green Line stops at Kenmore. I own a vehicle but it’s for my National Guard drills. Getting a second car to drive into Boston would be an exercise in frustration unless your school is on the outskirts. Also, once again depending where you attend school and where the closest stop is to you the Green Line would get you into Boston in 15-20 minutes.

The outfield isn’t entirely white MR: Jacoby is Native American and Crisp is African American. That said, I thought the same thing about how white the team has become. In 2004 the team has a strong latin character now our only hispanic pitcher is Delcarmen and while we have the two japanese players, our only latin everyday hitters are lowell and ortiz. Not throwing any accusations its just interesting to note.
