8/4: On the road again
| Prev. Gm:
|
Boston Red Sox (64-48) @ Kansas City Royals (52-60)
Clay Buchholz (2-6, 5.94) @ Gil Meche (9-9, 4.22) 7:10 PM EDT | Kauffman Stadium (Kansas City, Missouri) TV: NESN RADIO: WRKO 680, SBN 1150 |
GAME NOTES: More than a few story lines to watch in tonight's game...
Will Clay Buchholz pitch well enough to give himself a chance at locking down the #5 spot in the rotation? If he lays another egg, do the Red Sox have to consider other options?
Mike Lowell gets the night off (potentially a sight we might need to get used to given his gimpy hip). In his stead, Youk moves over to third and Sean Casey mans first. With Lowell out of the clean up spot, there's a shake up in the lineup (see comments) with Youk moving to the four spot and J.D. Drew manning the leadoff helm. If Mikey's out for an extended period of time, are we covered?
Can this team figure out the formula for a road win?

I'm surprised Alex Gordon has not had a better year. Billy Butler looks like he is about to break out though. Either way, hopefully Clay avoids the huge inning/s and we gain a 1/2 game on idle TB. It would be nice to be able to rest MDC and Okajima for a couple games considering how much work they are looking at down the stretch.

1. J.D. Drew, RF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
5. Jason Bay, LF
6. Sean Casey, 1B
7. Jed Lowrie, SS
8. Jason Varitek, C
9. Coco Crisp, CF
posted this earlier but what the hell...
I think they may have rushed Gordon, although I still think he will be great, too much there to get nothing. in any case, they'll have another good one pretty soon in Moustakas

Yeah, Moustakas has finally started to hit a little bit after a rough start and the mid-west league is notoriously tough on hitters. Either way its too bad the Royals did not pony up and take Wieters who was the consensus #2 behind Price...He put up a 1024 ops in A ball this year and has put up a .981 in double-a through 100 at bats...but such is the major league draft, signability and all that shit.

Maybe the formula for a road win is as simple as this: all 25 players caring about winning and doing their best. Go Sox!

Anyone watching NESN right now and the profile of Kyle Weiland and Notre Dame? Check here on Thursday for an interview I conducted with him!

Yeah Wieters is a hell of a player (wish we had him with our catching woes), but Moustakas will be an awesome offensive asset especially if he sticks in the middle infield. He's got a .780 ops with 18 homers at age 19 in a notorious pitchers league. That's pretty good for a shortstop. If he keeps progressing the Royals could have an infield including him, Gordon, and Butler in a couple of years

I think Butler is a DH, he's been pretty bad everyewhere they have tried to hide him. They will hopefully have Hosmer as a first baseman if they can get him signed by 8/15, he could move quickly for a high school kid. Hopefully Moustakas can stick at ss for them, regardless when you have a bat like Wieters at the catcher position that is something you should not pass up. Either way I hope KC finds a window where these kids all are contributing and get competitive for a while.

This inning should have been over a long time ago.

Ok that does it. I have hereby lost my patience and tolerance with Clay Buchholz.
You can claim his stats are improving all you want, but an 0-5 and potentially 0-6 run since AAA is not convincing me of anything. Clay sucks. I'll say it as that...he sucks. The second I read the Herald and saw that he was pitching I knew the odds of losing were greater in our favor.

And now this game has to be won entirely by some clutch hitting because of a less than dependable pitcher.
Back to the drawing board all over again with Clay.

He can't avoid the big inning. Not sure how much of that stems from pitching from the stretch. Either way it is always a good inning for Clay or a horrendous one...the runs are never scattered. May be time to give David Pauley or Zink a start if Colon is not ready. Pauley pitched tonight, 7 ip 4 h 2r and has a 3.3 era...he would be in line to pitch again in 5 days.

If Clay give up any more runs this inning any hope I had in him will pretty much be torn up.

i thought bay was gonna come through for us. not his night.

I guess Bay will have bad days...
Cmon Clay ... his pitch count is alright ... he's given up some damage but he can keep us in the game with 2-3 more strong innings ... I'm not giving up on him yet as our #5 ... My hopes were too high to give em up yet

Joba gets no win b/c in comes Edwar. I just want our damn offense to get going!

Biggest pet peeve with the Yankees...they never know when to quit.

Posted by Bob, August 4, 2008 10:25 PM
This one is entirely on the offense. You can score 2 runs in the 1st but you can't score again against KC? Bullshit, complete bullshit. Clay also needs to learn some control, I want to see him succeed, but at this point might as well bring up Zink and give him a shot. Clay has absolutely no guts with runners on.

Clay should take a lesson from Masterson and Lester and grow some balls. It's pretty clear to me that this is a talented kid who had initial success and bought into his own hype.

btw, Joba has a shoulder issue. Right now they are saying it is a tired shoulder but who knows at this point since the game just ended.
Lars Anderson hit his first double-a homerun tonight for more positive news.

Great, can we move Lars to the majors right away and move Youk to catcher? Varitek is useless

Looks like the Yankees are going to gain another game on us. Excellent, just shoot me.

Not quite...it's just 5-5. TEX could always pull a miracle out of their asses.
#33
Posted by Bob, August 4, 2008 11:01 PM
5-5 is as good as a Yankees win, they don't lose those games this time of year

They get a triple and completely squander it...good job Rangers.

O.K. Casey, now just lean into one... winning doesn't hurt!

Yeah, so we could score only 3 runs against KC and missed a golden opportunity to gain some ground. Now we're going to wake up tommorow with the Skanks only 1.5 back. I want Manny back.

Whoa I had no idea that "everyday" Eddie Guardado was still pitching. I remember when he supplanted LaTroy Hawkins as the Twins closer. I think it was 2000?

Oh quit whining. Honestly the way Manny was feeling he would've done jack shit. Stop this "I want Manny back garbage."
He's gone...deal. Yanks are out so let's hope Texas can pull through.

Posted by Bob, August 4, 2008 11:20 PM
Meh. Somehow the Yankee bullpen garbage like Giese and Veras and whoever else they have will manage to string that one out.
#47
Posted by Bob, August 4, 2008 11:21 PM
Oh I know, it just pisses me off to see him jacking HRs and cavorting around in LA LA while he dogged the last week and a half for us and now we can't manage 4 runs agains KC and leave 12 on base.

Bob, please stop conceding games to the Yankees. They're in third place for a reason. Think positively.

With Manny we'd have left just as many men on. He simply wasn't trying any more. He had to go.

One on, none out, top of the order for Texas against Damaso "I used to be a Pirate" Marte. I'm optimistic.

So yeah everyone loses in the AL East, but that only means that no one gains on another either.
We'll get them next game. Casey...better luck next time. Bay...you're still good in my book. Clay...pull your head out of your ass.

What happened? Gameday hung up on me with 1-0 on Hamilton!

The Sox lost, but the Yankees lost the game AND Joba. I'll take that.

I make it a rule not to root for a player to get injured, but considering that Joba has actually tried to murder Youk 3 times, I'll make an exception. I hope his career unfolds something like Mark Prior's.

So what exactly happened to Joba the Hutt since I was too fixated on the Red Sox?
