Wakefield heads to disabled list

Tim Wakefield is experiencing tightness in his right shoulder, the injury that knocked him out of commission for the 2007 World Series. He's been sent back to Boston, will miss his start Tuesday and be placed on the disabled list. Bartolo Colon's most recent rehab start was a struggle, so he may not be the solution. David Pauley is on the 40-man roster and could see action, but the Sox may give the assignment to knuckleballer Charlie Zink, who has been ramming the major league door with his shoulder all year, trying to get through. Is this his chance?

Good god, I'm absolutely tired of watching Buchholz right now....send him to AAA before he destroys his career.

Why did we ever remove Masterson from the rotation?????????????????????????????

Another one-run loss on the Road. How many does that make for the Red Sox this year...510..

Because the belief was, and I think it's justified, that Masterson could have a more pivotal role out of the bullpen. Remember, we still have Colon. I will scream if the Red Sox convert Masterson back to a starter. I do think people are being babied these days, but there's a line between babying and being stupid.

Agreed. It's not that Masterson, like Joba, won't help us in the rotation, it's that he is essential to the Pen at this time. Why bounce him around?!?

Bring up Zinc and Pauley or Hansack. Zink for Wake, Pauley or Hansack for Clay. Let them pitch.

Please let Clay get his feet under him at AAA and work his way back. How do we get fixated on the idea that only certain players can get the job done (Buchholz, Masterson, Hansen) while guys like Zinc, Pauley, Hansack, Smith can't. So far we have messed up the mechanics of Buchholz and Hansen, and Masterson probably came up too soon and is learning from the Pen. Give the ball to Zinc and see what he can do.

And nothing heard about Freddie Garcia yet, who wants to be a rental this year and FA next. The Sox may not have been seriously interested this morning, but I bet they are now.

Colon actually tossed three shutout innings today. Is only at 35 pitches though so I don't think we'll see him before Sept. Pauley will probably take Wake's spot and Clay will probably be thrown to the wolves once or twice more.

What about Dave Magadan. Shouldn't he be feeling

some heat about now.

Give it to Zink. He can't possibly be any worse than Cowboy Clay has been.

I hate to say it, but this season may be over.

How does Wakefield going to the DL mean the season is over? I'm willing to bet that nobody was more upset by that Bay trade (I suppose Hansen and Moss weren't thrilled, but whatever), and even I've changed my tune on the postseason.

As long as the Yanks keep flopping, we're ok.

the season is far from over, all the one-run losses have been tough to swallow, but they're hardly a sign that this team is done. a win tomorrow and the road trip was a success.

Because Zinc and Pauley pitched Friday and Saturday, respectively, I have heard rumors of a Tuesday callup for Devern Hansack, who is pitching very well after his DL stint, or Michael Bowden, who is still struggling in his AAA transition with an 0 - 4 and high ERA.

Wouldn't giving the ball to Bowden reinforce what I implied earlier . . . potential prospectus superstars are too often fast-tracked and used before they are truly ready, (Hansen, Buchholz, Ellsbury, Masterson) while lower projected but solid MLB ready players are often bypassed? Hansack, Zinc, Pauley seem ready now. There are two pre-9/1 slots open. It seems smarter to give them the ball.

Although Bowden should be a star in 2009, if given a chance to learn how, he is clearly not MLB ready now. I am pulling for Pawtucket's current best pitchers.

I would've loved to see Zink, but since I'm going to the game I definitely don't want Hansack. Can't say I quite trust his stuff, and is there any person more boring to see than Devern Hansack?
