Mike Lowell will likely be placed on the disabled list today, according to the Boston Herald.
Lowell felt twinges in his oblique during two awkward eighth inning swings in last night’s marathon game and, after striking out, walked gingerly to the dugout. Lowell visibly crouched over in pain following his first swing. Also battling a continuing hip problem that was seemingly improving, it’s best for Lowell to get some time on the disabled list and allow the oblique injury, usually a nagging one, time to rest and stop flaring up.

Ugh, if this happens last week (or 3 days ago), then Adam Dunn is suiting up a Red Sox uni tonight. This is very disappointing, even for someone who had absolutely no hope of Lowell doing anything this year.
.270/.335/.446, 14th out of 20 qual. MLB 3Bs in OPS, 13th/20 in OBP, 15th in HR, 14th in ISO, 16th in P/PA, 18th in games played. 17th in VORP. The average 3b is making 4,683,284.31 in MLB, and we paid $12.5m.

Lowrie will probably also see time at 3rd I’m thinking. Wonder who gets called up, with Moss gone I’m guessing Carter or Bailey. Also with Zink being sent back down to Pawtucket after last night who makes Wake’s next start? Buchholz? Bowden maybe (really unlikely though)?

Never mind, Carter is on the DL, probably Bailey then

This makes Epstein smart for signing Casey.

Lowell DL’ed, David Pauley recalled. I think they have one extra move to make, though… didn’t they option Zink back to Pawtucket?

Byrd replaced Zink on the roster Evan.

    So the rotation looks like
    Beckett
    Lester
    Dice-K
    Byrd
    Pauley
I like having Pauley right now, maybe he can be this year’s Kason Gabbard.

Pauley’s back down, and Buchholz is still #4 or 5. Poor kid. I hope, for his sake and ours, that he nails the next one. Talk about a trial by fire. I like Pauley too, and Zinc. I hope he gets another shot, against a lineup less potent than the best hitting team in baseball. In remembering Zinc, we must remember only he and Oki had scoreless innings, and that 5 pitchers: Lopez, Aardsma, MDC and Papelbon were also, uncharacteristically, bombed. And they almost did it again tonight.
