TRIVIA: Three straight starts against pitcher

The last trivia question asked "What actor paid $93,500 for the game-winning baseball that rolled between the legs of Boston Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner in the 1986 World Series?" The answer is Charlie Sheen.  Leaderboard is updated.

The new trivia question: Research was done by the Elias Sports Bureau that found had Paul Byrd faced Roy Halladay (Byrd will face Jesse Litsch instead) tomorrow, it would have been the first time since 1958 a pitcher had faced a team three times in a row against the same starting pitcher. Find the pitchers in question.

*Due to the tough question, this trivia is worth TWO points.

I dropped out of the running for this one to pry the answer out of Evan earlier this week. Once I heard 1958...I was done.

BTW, Byrd is actually now scheduled to face Shaun Marcum tomorrow. Lester goes against Litsch on Saturday.

MR:

As Evan and I were chatting, I mentioned Pedro in 2001 and we thought for a second that Elias had made an error. Unfortunately not...though that would've simplified things significantly.

Pisser, indeed. That's why I got the heck out of it :-)

FYI the answer CAN be found- I had to find the answer as Elias did not provide it, only the fact.

Sturdivant and Maas were both close in 58. Pappas pitched in all three games Sturdivant started...does that count?

Hey everyone,

I've been an avid reader of Firebrand for the past several months, but never posted since I didn't feel I had much to contribute. I found this question really interesting, though, so I decided to give it a try.

After an hour of combing through Baseball-Reference.com, I think I've got the right answer.

Dave Hillman of the '58 Cubs faced Sam Jones of the Cards 3 straight times on 8/30, 9/4, and 9/9.

Not sure if there's a faster way to do it, but I found them through brute force, looking through the gamelogs of all pitchers who pitched more than 100 innings in 1958 (I'm glad I started with the National League Pitching Register instead of the AL one).

Peter: Based on what Evan came up with, that is indeed the correct answer.
