Beckett pushed back until Friday with elbow inflammation. The hits just keep coming… Wakefield is starting Tuesday. I don’t know how the starters line up for the Yankees series, but it isn’t going to be pretty especially with Lester and Dice-K going in this set against Toronto.
Beckett’s postponement, Buchholz’s rehab, Wake’s shoulder, Schill’s arm, Papi’s wrist, Mike’s hip, JD’s disc, Lugo’s knee, Manny’s hammy haven’t, as Troy pointed out, killed us, so it must be making us stronger.
All year we have relied on Pawtucket to compensate for these losses. IMO, this hurt the development of Buchholz and Ellsbury, as we couldn’t send them down to finish schooling. Ironically, now in the final stretch of a tight race, we can’t use some of Pawtucket’s brightest lights, (Carter, VanEvery, Hansack), because even they are injured. We are strong like a bull, but can bulls play baseeball?
Oops. That was me. And we are still very much in the race.
Well Buck and Edwards do have something in common. They are both YOUNG and will be back.
Remember: What does not kill you makes you Stronger.
I agree with your sentiment, but Clay should understand the urgency in his situation. People came in to this season expecting him and Lester to compete for the 5th starter, now Lester has become a key piece of the rotation for the next 5 years. If Clay doesn’t find a way to turn himself around Bowden may pass him in the organization’s plans. Bowden doesn’t have Clay’s stuff, but he has better movement on his fastball and a MUCH better command of the strike zone. Huntzinger is also making progress in the lower minors and Casey Kelly has pretty advanced stuff for someone his age and may move quickly once he’s converted to a pitcher. I still think that Clay can become what we’d hoped, he was the best pitcher in the minors last year and the stuff is there, but he needs to get his head straight quickly because if he takes too long there may not be a spot left for him.
I’m not giving up on Buchholz, I just no longer trust him to be a #2 or better until he proves me wrong. Nothing in his 2008 performance makes me think he’s within 2 years of being an MLB pitcher, so hopefully by 2010 he can be something other than fodder.
Remember, TINSTAAPP.
Way, way too early to give up on Buchholz. It’s a rare pitcher who can come up and dominate right away; there are almost always bumps in the road. He had some early success; the league caught up with him; now he has to adjust. There’s a chance that he’s too much of a head case to make those adjustments, but I doubt it.
Look at it this way: the guy is still younger than Papelbon.
I’m definitely not ready to give up on him yet either.

what the hell is going on in this inning? I hate Toronto so much
This ump must be blind
Better pray that LA beat Minnesota because we don’t want to be in second place in the WC
well, I just got an iphone, so that’s the only thing keeping me from being a bit annoyed by this score. So much for the auto win.
Why did the Red Sox alter his mechanics in the first place? His 3 best pitches are breaking balls and he does very well when he throws them. Why obsess with his fastball to the point where you alter his breaking pitches?
His curve has almost half the break it did on it before the change in arm slot. And his change looks like a slow fastball. Go back to the old arm slot. Let him pitch like he did when he was a top prospect and get his confidence back. Then bring him back up later next year if he looks ready.
Looks like the Rays are gonna protect our Wild Card lead for tonight.
Thanks Rays! Gotta love the stretch run and all of it’s quirkiness.
The Angels need to protect that WC lead too.
Top Red Sox pitching prospect Michael Bowden will attempt to clinch the Wild Card with the Pawtucket Red Sox tonight. I’m not sure how many of you have been keeping track of Bowden, but he came into this year as the Red Sox third best pitching prospect (behind Buchholz and Masterson).
He’s only 21 years of age, but he’s excelled through the Red Sox farm system. He began this year at Double A where he had a 2.33 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP and a 4.21 K/BB with 101 strikeouts in 104.1 innings. Tonight he’s making the 6th Triple A start of his career. So far at the Triple A level he has a 3.21 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP and a 4.6 K/BB with 23 strikeouts in 33.2 innings.
And Bob, the Twins lead the AL Central, so nothing they do tonight can challenge the Red Sox wild card lead.
Ok guys…let this be known right now:
DO NOT EVER call Lester an automatic win. I understand the good vibes he brings and he’s an awesome pitcher, but like taunting the Yankees, it will come back to bite you in the ass. Let us never do that again…EVER. I don’t want any jinx bullshit.
All good pitchers have lousy days, but I agree with Colin about jinxing it. In the meantime, think good thoughts about Daisuke’s unique technique.
Colin, the only thing more dead than the Yankees is the rotting, decrepit corpse of Babe Ruth and his bullshit curse. THEY’RE NOT COMING BACK, I GUARANTEE IT.
Yet, they are the only team we worry about that won again today. No taunting.
