A look ahead to Labor Day weekend

The Red Sox are embarking on a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox before hosting the Baltimore Orioles for the first series of September. Unfortunately, Fire Brand won’t be around for Sept. 1, the day that 40-man rosters expand, but we can reasonably bet on David Ross, the former Cincinnati Reds catcher, being called up to serve as the third catcher. A pitcher is also likely to be recalled, most likely Chris Smith. We could see Hunter Jones later in the season, but the Red Sox want the PawSox to be relatively strong for their playoff push.
Dice-K will oppose Javier Vazquez, David Pauley will take on Mark Buehrle and Tim Wakefield will go up against Gavin Floyd. With our success at home, I have to think we’ll win at least one game, but unfortunately, the scenario that we are swept given the pitching matchups is pretty good… the only tossup at avoiding a sweep, in my mind, is tonight’s game…

I have awesome seats for Sunday’s game. I typically get pissy that Wake pitches every game I go to but given our rotation it is probably the second best scenario (watching Dice-K is too painful). If I had to put $$ on the AL representative for the WS right now I would probably go with the White Sox so I’ll be happy if we win one out of three as well given the match-ups.

I will never understand how for everyone, it seems that Wakefield always pitches when they go.

I thought we were done underestimating Wake, and have accepted Daisuke’s nibbling style (no walks last game, just hits). We will know in an hour if young Pauley is really ready for Fenway, and Masterson will be waiting for long relief if he isn’t.
Post season is in our hands now. We just won 6 of 9 on the road, and clobbered some good teams. We return home with a powerful hitting team which now includes Kotsay, Lowrie and a resurgent Tek, Papi, Coco. This is when Youk, Pedroia & Bay strut their best stuff. We start 20 of our remaining games at home, and we start by taking this series.
