In lieu of a game thread (the game will be liveblogged later tonight…come join in the fun!), I thought I’d make mention of the sports story all over New England today.
I am saddened by this news. Those of you who read the comments know Sean O’s position on Tom Brady (hint: he’s happy he’s done), but I disagree with Sean even though he brings up a couple of salient points. There’s a reason he’s piled up the statistics and the rings and will end his career known as the greatest quarterback of all time. It’s a devastating blow, but with the weapons the Patriots have and Matt Cassell’s solid showing, I think the Patriots will make out fine. They won’t roll through the regular season like they would have, but they should at least make the playoffs.
For all intents and purposes, however, our vengeance Super Bowl Ring will have to wait another year.

The greatest QB of all time doesn’t fold in 2 of the biggest games of his career. As far as I’m concerned, I hope people forget about the Pats and focus on the team with the highest run differential in the AL.
Or, something that actually matters, like that pesky election thing.
It’s a bit more of a team game then baseball and lets not forget that Matt Light, Logan Mankins and Dan Koppen were all supposed pro-bowlers and they along with an oxy’d out Nick Kazcur didn’t get it done like they had all year. Brady was typically good in a collapsing pocket but the line typically provided some sort of protection throughout the season and became sieve-like in the biggest game of the year. I think the bigger choke job was the O-line by a country mile…if they could have sustained their blocks at all it would have been a different outcome.
Either way, outside of the Sox I actually follow the Bruins the most, then boxing, then football….so I’m not too upset either. Matt Cassel will probably cash-in with FA next off-season given the weapons he has and disappoint some team who invests heavily in him…that will be amusing.

Probably because he was under duress the entire game. Either way, I lived through plenty of bad years following the Pats and terrible quarterbacks and Brady was a big part of three superbowl victories. I’m not going to be psyched that he suffered a terrible injury because he didn’t manage to come through in one game where there was more then enough blame to go around.
Does the “two biggest games of his career” include his 3 Super Bowl wins? or are you forgetting those?
Sean, I have been thinking about what you said about Tom Brady, and have to respond. You said Brady needed Moss and Welker to complete a pass. Actually, he led a doormat team to dominance and the 3 rings long before Randy and Welker arrived . . . and became two more guys the amazing Pats picked off the dust heap, rehabbed, and helped them excell.
You accuse Brady of being the media darling, etc. Actually, while the Mannings were, and are, doing half the commercials on TV, Brady refused to participate, focusing on the game. The Mannings have a second career in acting. They are naturals and very funny. Tom will probably write books.
For years Brady was considered second rate because Payton broke all the records (while the Pats won the SuperBowl), so last year they said stuff-it, and decided to win 16 straight and break all the records just for the heck of it . . . and they did. Last year, after a record breaking year and playing hurt, Brady limped through the Superbowl, got clobbered repeatedly, had a bad game. Now, somehow, workaholic backup Brady became unpopular . . . in Boston??? Absurd. Sounds like the same kind of irrational bashing old Billy Buckner, Teddy Ballgame and Teddy Kennedy got for decades. It doesn’t make sense, and was media driven.
