Prev. Gm:

Boston Red Sox (89-61) @ Tampa Bay Rays (88-60)
Josh Beckett (12-9, 4.10) @ Andy Sonnanstine (13-7, 4.47)

7:10 PM EDT | Fenway Park (Boston, MA)
TV: NESN RADIO: WRKO 680, SBN 1150

GAME NOTES: From Mostly Running: Before I die I want to watch a baseball game with Sherman Alexie. I want that game to mean something to him. I want to hear him describe the physical act of pitching a baseball and willing it to the edges of what is physically possible. I want to hear him talk about how a batter’s speed relates to the greenness of the grass and how bats are made from trees that used to grow. In my mind I am sitting in Fenway Park and the Red Sox are playing a meaningful September game against the Yankees. Beckett is pitching, all the uniforms are so clean they don’t need players in them to walk the field. The umpires are friendly but precise and play no role in the game. That won’t happen today, instead it’s cowbells and catwalks, a team I can’t root against and the very real possibility we’ll see another laughter. Let’s hope we’re on the right side of it. It makes me sad that Florida, a state with few places with more elevation than a pitcher’s mound, doesn’t appreciate how fun to watch this Rays team is.

You gotta hand it to them. They went from pure suck to some great win. The Rays have my respect even if they look like some upstarts. I think in close games we’re better at smashing the Yanks than we are the Rays…which is totally ironic figuring the Yankees would’ve been harder to deal with.
Oh well. I’ll take the Rays as our new opponent any day over NY. We’ll get them tomorrow.

We were shut down tonight, including Coco who, IMO, is not trying to get his old job back, but is auditioning for a starting job elsewhere . . . too bad for us, except he could again be a major player in a trade with his new bat, haircut and continuing D. In the meantime, the more versatile Ells keeps getting hits and runs, is finally adjusting, and is a keeper. Has anyone else noticed that Mark Kotsay has gone stone cold??? I wish Tito would give VanEvery a better look, as his power might give us an edge in lieu of Kotsay.

Van Every struck out every 2.3 at bats in triple-a…I was not a fan of the Kotsay acquisition but he is a better option then Van Every in my opinion…I’d rather see Bailey or Carter in right for 6 innings and then Kotsay as a defensive replacement. Or maybe Drew could look over at third base and see Lowell playing through a debilitating injury and man-up.
