yeah, bats haven't inspired too much confidence in me so far... Lester can't afford to let a single run score, because we won't score more than 3

The offense is going to lean on Drew and Bay because no one else seems capable of doing anything

Jeez, I didn't even have time to type "Two on, one out, Kotsay, then Lowrie. Looks like we won't score this inning." Nice job, Kotsay.
"Plate Discipline" Look it up.

I'm trying really really hard, but I can't feel good about the rest of this series with the way this offense has been, they were lucky to win the first two games, looks like the luck has run out

I hate to say it, but even if we do win this series, we'll never get past Tampa. Tampa! Good Lord, did I just write that?

You're right, this team just doesn't have the offense to do it. And with Beckett clearly not 100% they don't have the pitching either.

No offense, mediocre starting pitching (after Lester), erratic bullpen, injured veterans... other than that, no problems at all...

I just opened my liquor cabinet for the first time in a month (had been cutting back, but hey it's the playoffs now) and found a bottle of Patron that I forgot I had. I would love it if the Red Sox could win so I could drink a little bit (Patron is strictly for celebrations)

How about this: I'd love if the sox win so I can shave this ridiculous playoff beard.

Whiskey is what I drink when the offense is playing like this. Lots of whiskey.

Good to hear from Farrell that everyone is available in the bullpen, it's going to take a complete team effort

Who are you and what have you done with my favorite player?

RIP Pedroia, may you be resurrected in 2009... or the ALCS.

That was a bad throw, but Kendrick should also get some blame, that was catchable

FUCK! Balls...why will you not drop when the Sox hit them?!?

I understand Dustin slumping by the way. He did it in the 2007 ALDS and then exploded afterwards. For some odd reason the Angels really sap his pint-sized power offensively.

my internet went down while the offense scored. I'll gladly trade internet access for more runs for the rest of this game

I'm gonna say the obvious: great night for Lester... we have a new ace

just kill me now please... how the hell do you walk Vlad Guererro, the guy who swings at pitches over his head??

what the fuck was that??? I swear this team is going to give me an ulcer

how fucking stupid is francona? Masterson has SUCKED for 4 games, and now he probably cost us the series.

I just felt it was only a matter of time with him...let oki get one more out come on tito

Posted by Sean O, October 6, 2008 11:02 PM
we've scored 2 runs in 16 innings. game over. If we do make the ALCS, leave Masterson off the roster. I'd rather have timlin in there.

Posted by Bob, October 6, 2008 11:03 PM
all of this garbage with two outs, I am absolutely speechless, this offense isn't capable of scoring more than 2 runs, see you wednesday in Cali, and there is absolutely no way that we are winning the Santana/Dice-K matchup again

Time to go get the win and go to Tampa. Let's go boyos
#59
Posted by M.A.G, October 6, 2008 11:04 PM
Right now, we have only one reliable starter (Lester), and only one reliable reliever (Papelbon). This is no good.

Glad I held off on ordering a "Monsterson" t-shirt...

This is the must win game... If we don't win tonight...
#65
Posted by Sean O, October 6, 2008 11:07 PM
yup, if I ordered a Monsterson shirt it'd be in the oven right now.
#66

TD, you meanie!
At least get the Destroia shirt.
#69
Posted by Bob, October 6, 2008 11:10 PM
this is not going to extras by the way, good hitters (i.e. those who don't play for the Red Sox) don't get put out by pitchers they're facing for the third straight game
#72
Posted by Bob, October 6, 2008 11:14 PM
so we're trying to lose this one?? Because that's the only reason I can think for Masterson to be here
#73
Posted by Sean O, October 6, 2008 11:14 PM
why is this jackass still pitching? Does Francona just want a free trip to California?
#74
Posted by M.A.G, October 6, 2008 11:15 PM
Even if we win... We have to worry. We are playing terrible baseball.
#78
Posted by Colin, October 6, 2008 11:16 PM
Thanks Justin. You are no longer Monsterson. You probably just cost us the game.
#79
Posted by Bob, October 6, 2008 11:17 PM
this one is over, no way they fail to score here, they actually have an offense
#80
Posted by Evan Brunell, October 6, 2008 11:17 PM
UGH UGH UGH third base with one out, they just need a big fly... don't give it to em
#81
Posted by Sean O, October 6, 2008 11:17 PM
season over. thank you francona. and now we get to see Matsuzaka give up 7 runs in 3 innings in game 5.
#82
Posted by JaredK, October 6, 2008 11:17 PM
Just want to remind everyone of my preference for MDC over Masterson...been saying it for a while
#83
Posted by Bob, October 6, 2008 11:17 PM
really? a pitching change? you think that might be a good idea now? good thing you're paying attention to the game
#84
Posted by Colin, October 6, 2008 11:18 PM
Seriously...fucking unacceptable.
We need a run in the ninth...please! Stop this weak offense of yours Boston! Please!
I'm begging you!
#86
Posted by Sean O, October 6, 2008 11:18 PM
Francona better have his job questioned after tonight. Masterson has no place in any game within 6 runs, let alone the single most important inning of the season. He better start next year in AAA, because nobody in Boston is going to want to see him.

this is an interesting strategy, trying to hit the weakest hitter in the game not named Varitek

Now I could really use a run fellas.

oh my GOD. win this NOW, I want a Deus Ex Machina win.
#105
Posted by Colin, October 6, 2008 11:23 PM
Please offense...runs.
I mean I could smell something big here. Something dramatic for Boston but in a good sense.
#106
Posted by Bob, October 6, 2008 11:24 PM
if we don't score after that there is no hope, seriously the Red Sox have been like John McClane in Die Hard in this series, keep getting shot yet somehow lucky things help us out

Frank Caliendo is good at impressions, but does he do any of people under the age of 50?

funny story, right before Bay doubled, I had typed in the comment: "so that's what a good reliever looks like"
#119
Posted by Tessie's Dad, October 6, 2008 11:32 PM
You know, if it had been that Ramirez guy on second, he would have flipped off his batting helmet while coming down th ethird base line, and slowed himself down just enough to be tagged out.
Thank you, Jason Bay!

Bay took a spike to the hand there, Manny would not have scored. I'm breaking out the Patron

Bay: player of the series.
He has been crucial in our three victories.

Will all those who gave up in the late innings please apologize to all of us who don't hate on any player who doesn't either get a hit every single time up or strike out every single opposing batter? Seriously, I don't mind those who boo a bad performance, but the over the top hatred displayed by some Boston fans for every single little mistake is unseemly. I guess now that Masterson, Okajima, Francona, Pedroia, and anyone else in the 'pen other than Papelbon, and anyone else other than Lester in the rotation, all should be, what? Thrown into the Charles? And Papi doesn't play anymore? Really?
And even with 2 pitchers and and a manager more stupid than Sarah Palin we somehow find ourselves in the ALCS for the 4th time in 6 years. Amazing.

Posted by Bob, October 7, 2008 12:35 AM
Chris, those of us who complain don't hate the players, we just get caught up in the moment. I apologize for my over the top behavior, but understand that I was under the influence of both baseball and alcohol. I think that most of the people who are here regularly can attest that I'm usually pretty level-headed. (I hope)

Chris makes a good point. If any of the players that are regularly threated with death during the games happen to read these comments, they will don flack jackets and look for a Brinks truck to take them out of town. Sounds like Yankee fans, heat of the moment or not.
Masterson is a miracle, from AA to being Monsterson. He is a kid who can screw up, just like the big guys. Fellow rookie Longoria went 0 - 4 today and won anyway, just like Justin.
Oki and MDC have fully redeemed themselves . . . not perfect, but neither are the best relievers from the CWS, Angels, Twins, Cubs, Mets, etc.
MVP Pedroia and MVP Youk carried us to the ALDS and wore themselves out doing so. We support them during their down times because Boston fans are smart fans and understand baseball.
Tek, Wake, Timlin are miracles at the other end of the age spectrum. Still doing what they are doing, and doing it so well, and passing on such knowledge to the young Lesters and Mastersons is what makes the Sox great. Talk about leaving it on the field tonite, Tek. Wow!
The post-All-Star Red Sox have become a team. The post-season Red Sox find ways to win. Look out Tampa, you haven't experienced anything like this before.

Thank you Gerry for your great post. I am embarrassed to be a Boston fan after reading the comments left on this blog. Sean O....what have you possibly done in your lifetime that gives you the right to say such ridiculous things about guys like Masterson. These guys go out there and work hard for 162+ games and are playing against the best competition in the WORLD and you are siting at home like a jackass making fun of the team that you supposedly support?!?! Some of these guys...i.e. Masterson, are under 25 years old. What were you doing when you were 25??? I guarantee you weren't pitching in the ALDS against Vlad with millions of people watching. It's fine that you have your opinions about who you would like to be in the game, but a little respect for these guys would go a long way. I used to think that Boston had pretty classy fans, but Sean O., you are proving me wrong.

I love Malden, Colin. I wouldn't wander over to the Everett side more than need be, but staying downtown shouldn't be a problem.
Sox Fan, tldr.
