From Peter Gammons’ ESPN Insider column:
Walking down Brookline Avenue outside Fenway Park on Tuesday night, one Red Sox player said virtually the same thing. “If there’s anyone who can turn this series around, it’s The Magic Man [Daisuke Matsuzaka],” the player said. He’s right, because Matsuzaka cranked out a two-seamer in Game 1 of the ALCS that made him look like the Japanese Greg Maddux.
“Get us to a seventh game with Jon Lester,” the player said, “and we’ll see what happens.” …
“No one can get them messed up better than Daisuke,” said the Red Sox player. “If that happens, we can still win.”

The exxon sign lit on fire. That’s a pretty bad omen.
For what its worth… I voted for Sox in seven.
Kind of weird that the player is anonymous…not like anything inflammatory was said. Either way, its a long shot but I can see it happening. Feel reasonably good about games 5 and 7 if we get there. We may need Jeff Gilooly to pay Scott Shields a visit prior to game 6.
The Sox have made a habit out of Houdini-style narrow escapes in the ALCS since 2003. Well, needless to say, if we’re going anywhere this year, we’ll have to do it again, that’s all.
Nice that the guys are confident. Now would somebody start hitting please?
I agree, it’s weird. Petey went on to say that it’s someone who’s “been through it” before with the Sox… so he was definitely on the 2007 team, and may have been on 2004.
Maybe the unidentified Red Sox “player” is Scott Boras? He has played the Red Sox pretty well lately. (And he’s Dice-K’s agent.)
The Sox are a young team, almost as young as the Rays, with some older players who contributed substantially to this great run. Things change.
The age 21 – 30 players upon whom the Red Sox future will be built include Lester, Beckett, Daisuke, Buchholz, Bowden, Papelbon, Delcarmen, Masterson, Aardsma, Bard, Youk, Pedroia, Lowrie, Bay, Ellsbury, Anderson, Reddick, maybe Bailey, Carter, Coco, Van Every, Jones.
Many of the over 30 guys like Oki, Lopez, Lowell, J.D., Papi, Tek, Wake, Timlin, Casey, Kotsay, Cora, Lugo won’t be around next year. IMO, a healthy Oki, Lopez, JD, Lowell and Papi will be central to the rebuilt 2009 team. We will miss the others, and thank them here.
We will certainly trade, and I hope we trade for great young talent. How about finding a home for Street, and bringing back Shoppach and Hanley. Impossible? Not at all. Do-able and reasonable.
Update: It appears that Manny might be without a World Series this year as the Phillies are taking it to LA 5-1 in the top of the 8th right now.
Go Phillies. Sorry Manny…nothing personal, I just want Philly in there more.
Me too, Philly’s my fav. NL team and 3rd fav overall… although they may be 2nd… I’m not sure.
Congrats to the phils….I still feel like Brad Lidge’s streak is going to end in horrible disappointment on the biggest stage. When he went all Gagne with the Astro’s I just didn’t feel like he didn’t have the make-up to close. He’s overdue and will blow at least one game in the WS.
If the only satisfaction I get from this season is that Manny is not going to be playing for another ring this year (barring another Boras move of mind-blowing proportions) I will be mostly happy.
amen.
