Red Sox to debut new road uniforms?

Dan over at Red Sox Monster made a great catch today. Looks like the Sox may be considering changing road uniform designs. Here’s an image of what Dan caught on Flickr plus comments:

Notes on Flickr by “wally1912″ say:

  • Return of blue lettering with red trim (Boston, the number)
  • Return of classic double piping around neck, placket and sleeves.
  • Player name in contrasting colors (top right), if name is needed on jersey.
  • Nameless jersey (bottom right) which is the classic look.

Please note that there is no validity associated with these uniforms. This may just be someone designing a new road jersey on his or her’s own time and the Red Sox may not be considering a redesign. Once this image makes the rounds, if it disappears from Flickr and/or the Sox make an announcement, that will confirm its validity.

I really, really dig this. I’m not a fan of the way the current away uniforms look at all.

It worked magic for the Rays. I also have a hard time with the Red tops, and much prefer the classic look. The team is the Red Sox, not the Red Tops.

Love the minimalism of the current road uni’s, hate this. No change, please.

I agree with Sam, I like the current road uniforms.

I don’t mind them, I like the current ones though. These look a lot like the Giants’ jerseys, not a bad thing, that’s just what struck me when I first saw them.

    Shane,
    I’m having the same issue.
Shane and Sam: The current uniforms do nothing for me. I think they clash horribly. They look great on a t-shirt, not on a uniform.

Just a photoshop hack job. The Boston isn’t straight, and is lifted from another image and darkened (since that and the number 58 look black instead of blue). Same with Papelbon, which is why it looks so weird.
Nothing to worry about, since these are really ugly. If they wanted to go old school, bring back the design from the ’40s-70s, 80s-90s. As it is, I love my current away jersey. Think it looks great.

These new unis might look impressive to some people but not to me. The Red Sox’s main color is RED; it should stay red and not only at home but on the road as well. Before I became a Sox fan in late 2000 I always thought their navy road uniforms looked like crapola times ten, dull and no life to them at all. At least now the gray has red lettering spelled “BOSTON”, and along with the undershirts puts out a nice red ensemble. Nyet to the new uniforms.

I’d personally be on board with them going back to the grey with blue lettering look they had in the 80s, although I do prefer this look to the current away uniform.

I agree with JOe, i ‘m a big fan of the old Road jersey’s friom the 80’s with just the block lettered “Boston” on the front and the black stirrups. I don’t know if it just reminds me of those great teams, or if it really does just looks classic and Bad A$$.It think the above would be a step in the right direction. Also would love to see a real retro look for the alt jersey instead of the tomato tops. I think the solid color jersey’s make teams look like softball players.

Yeah, the red tops are terrible.

Yeah I can’t see us changing our road unis to that. I’m not against going blue in the numbers, and a change from the current gray may not be a bad idea. But something is just not right with those. Sean is probably right on the photoshop theory.
As for the red tops. I think they go with them because they effectively mix things up (which is the point of an alternate jersey I’d assume). But, while I’m not passionately against them, they certainly aren’t the best looking jerseys in the world. I must echo Joe and request something retro as our alt. The Sox have a lot of history. We should display it.

On a completely unrelated note. MLBTR hinted at the idea that the Sox may be interested in the Rockies catcher Chris Ianetta. I found this worth mentioning simply because it has yet to be mentioned as far as I know. Any thoughts?

I don’t know much of Ianetta, but for what I have read, it’s a player with potential. Some scouts speak very highly on him. And aparently he has a higher slugging mark on the road than in Colorado, which of course is a very good thing. He looks like a solid defender too.
But, in any case, it’s not going to happen. For what I have read is far more probable the Rockies trade Torrealba and keep this kid.

Ianetta would be a solid pick-up, but I would give up less for him than Saltalamacchia

I agree with Bob. In fact, I wonder why the FO has not pulled the trigger already. A trade with Texas seems so natural, and mutually beneficial. I would like to see our catcher situation resolved as soon as possible.

Ianetta, Montero, Salty, Teagarden, I’m sure there are other catchers out there we haven’t thought of.

Very true. I’m sure Theo’s list is much longer than ours. Which probably answers MAGs question as to why they haven’t made a move yet. He’s exploring our options. No rush.
As for Ianetta. He looks good at first glance. That’s all I can say as I know very little about him. Though, looking at the situation from Colorado’s perspective, you’re right MAG, I’m sure they’d much rather trade Torrealba. Only way we get Ianetta is if Theo is high on him and decides to offer alot. We’ll see. Just another name to keep on the radar.

Word is the Reds are trying to acquire Yorvit. Can’t imagine it would be that hard.
