How good will the Red Sox bullpen be this year? Below are the averaged projections from CHONE, Bill James, and Marcel for the innings pitched and FIP projections:

Name IP FIP
Jonathan Papelbon 68.00 2.78
Hideki Okajima 61.33 3.67
Manny Delcarmen 74.33 3.52
Takashi Saito 51.33 3.07
Justin Masterson* 70.50 4.10
Ramon Ramirez 64.67 3.63
Javier Lopez 57.33 4.22

* No Bill James Projection

It is significantly more difficult to project pitchers compared to hitters but there is credence to these numbers. Major health issues may pop up and expose this bullpen but based off of every projection system available this may prove to be a truly elite bullpen.

    Hmm, that’s not how i wrote it. It was all spaced. Hopefully it is still readable.

    That’s an easier way to read the chart I had in this post. That also has the Bullpens WAR. A rough estimate is this bullpen is 5.42 wins above replacement. Pretty impressive.

    This seems to be the strongest and deepest Pen the Sox have had in years, and will certainly improve from 2nd highest ERA in 2008 to among the best in 2009. Tito, Farrell and the Starting Rotation must must feel very confident about now. Papelbon/Saito/RRammi/Masterson/Oki/MDC/Lopez is so much stronger than K-Rod/Putz or Rivera/Marte
    Are there any projections for the possible depth of this group: Hansack, Aardsma, Littleton, McBeth, Traber? Do you know of any projections for possible additions to the Pen from AAA, such as Jones, Bard, Gonzales, Hull?
    Good research

    Click there and you can see all of the Red Sox pitchers. I also added K/BB. There are 21 pitchers there. They are still the average of CHONE, Bill James, and Marcel.

    Apparently the spreadsheet isn’t viewable by everyone. I signed in with my GMail account but still got the following message: “We’re sorry, [myaddress]@gmail.com does not have permission to access this spreadsheet.”
    Not sure if you need to enable global access or what. If you need it I can send along my GMail address, but I prefer not to display it on message boards so I can keep the spambots and scammers at bay. Thanks in advance, Dave.
