David Pauley designated for assignment

David Pauley was designated for assignment to clear a 40-man spot. The Red Sox currently now have a full 40-man roster with the addition of John Smoltz and Takashi Saito.

Over three years, Pauley had a 9.53 ERA in the major leagues but sacked up big time with a thrilling assignment at Yankee Stadium in 2006. Sean O’s reaction to that tough loss: “Pauley, the guy almost everyone thought would suck, throws an absolute
gem, and loses because goddamn Seanez walks in Giambi? And then, when
we’re about to tie it up, a home run gets taken away by Melky Freaking
Cabrera?”

Only 25, Pauley could have a decent major league career ahead of him but with his poor fastball, is better suited to the National League. He stands a good chance of clearing waivers and being outrighted to Pawtucket, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see Pauley’s former team, the San Diego Padres, claim him.

Sorry to see some of our organizational depth depart, but that’s what happens when you sign free agents: the 40-man tightens up.
And it’s fair to say that the Sox have better options for emergency rotation help. Pauley’s a nice pitcher, but probably a #5 at best. If I ran a team that was short of pitching — like the Nationals, Marlins, Rangers, or even maybe the Mets — I’d try to snap him up.

You had to go and remind me of that game, didn’t you? At least the link to the game thread is broken so I don’t have to relive the whole debacle over again. (Of course, now you’ll probably go and fix it just to wreck my day.)

LOL… I checked and the link is not broken, so it’s probably your computer refusing to show it to you.

Well, it doesn’t work when I click on it, but I was able to get to the game thread (why, oh why did I do that to myself? WHY?) by removing one of two consecutive oh-six-slashes (i.e.: ‘06/’) from the URL.
I only wish my computer would shelter me from such things.

I was hoping to see Zink claimed off waivers after he was DFA’d, instead of him being outrighted. I agree that Pauley would be better suited for the National League.

Hope he works his way back to Pawtucket. He had an excellent 2008 in Pawtucket, and 2009 could be his year. I’d rather he was part of a trade. Too bad, as he is part of the group of young turks that Mama Ellsbury calls “my boys.” It’s a tight group, and he works well wilth Charlie Zink.

Pauley is beyond awful, pray that he signs with someone else.
