Some shocking news came out of the Yankees’ spring training camp as they prepare to break in their new Yankee Stadium… one that just adds another dash of controversy to a team that needed more controversy like Bartolo Colon needs more doughnuts.
More surprising? The news is courtesy of captain Derek Jeter, who now has his loyalty and reputation as a Yankee questioned. The news:
Jeter mentioned in passing as he headed to the field to participate in infield drills that he has no intention of moving off shortstop. Jeter, signed through the 2011 season, is considered by many to be a poor defender despite his three Gold Gloves.“I’d rather play for the Red Sox than move off short,” Jeter remarked. “I’ve shown a lot of loyalty to this organization and if they’re going to repay that loyalty by asking me to move off short, well that’s one payment I won’t take.” (New York Post)
Well, that was unexpected. Would you guys be willing to have Cap’n Jetes don Sox red and man shortstop for the Olde Towne Team if it meant snubbing the Yankees?

It is funny how much these teams are intertwined- your April fools thing was about a Yankee, mine was about the Sox getting Hanley.
If the Yankees are willing to take Lugo in return, I’ll take Jeter at SS.
Thats said, they’re almost the same player at this point in their careers… almost.
If this isn’t April Fool, the key phrase is this: “Jeter mentioned in passing as he headed to the field , , ,” This isn’t a press conference, it’s his offhand opinion that he will play at SS through 2011, 3 more years.
IMO, Derek Jeter is one of the great Yankees who stands above and beyond any Red Sox-Yankee rivalry, like Mantle or Ted Williams. Any team, including the Sox, would love to get him, even at SS in 2011.
i just love the reference to Bartolo Colon and the doughnuts!!! Isnt anybody laughing?? Did he ever come back from the barbeque??
I find it beyond amusing that after all these years of being basically worshipped by Yankees fans as THE Yankee he comes out and shows that he really isn’t that different than any other ballplayer. Flippantly mentioning that if he doesn’t get treated the way he’s been treated than he’d rather play for the enemy. It shoudn’t be that surprising though. Few major leaguers are really any different. Some may show more “passion” or “heart” but when it comes down to it loyalty from a player is only as great as the loyalty his organization is willing to show him. I think most fans already understand this, but it’s still pretty shocking (or enjoyable, depending on who your rooting for) to hear it from somebody like Jeter.
Not bad. Needs more werewolves…
