Matt Garza made the Red Sox bats disappear last night. Let’s hope there’s some pent up offense ready to explode this evening against Andy Sonnanstine. Justin Masterson looks to make it back to back impressive outings, following up on his performance Sunday night against the Yankees. I wonder if Justin drove the Mini down to Tampa?
Before Van Every on Wednesday night, who was the last Red Sox player to hit his first major league home run in extra innings?
It appears as if the Sox knew what they were doing as Kelly as been nothing but phenomenal on the mound. He’s held hitters to a .561 OPS and has yet to allow a home run. Scouting wise, his fastball is sitting in the high 80’s to low 90’s with one report of him touching 95 mph on the stadium gun. You can put as much stock as you’d like into the latter claim, but it really says a lot when the main caveat against him is his average fastball.
This decade has been the most monumental in the franchise’s history. Not only did new ownership arrive, but Fenway Park was revitalized, a Nation was born (in the media, that is), a new generation of stars (Nomar, Manny, Pedro, Big Papi, Papelbon, Pedroia) put their stamp on their team… oh, and there were those two World Championships as well.
All this was done thanks to the incredible work that Theo Epstein and the rest of the baseball operations put in to give us the players that we root for every day. They are, to be certain, the reasons why we have our first two rings since 1918.
But let’s not count out Lady Luck. Lady Luck is a fickle mistress; you never know when she’ll turn on you.
Even though Boston just recently had an 11-game winning streak snapped and beat the Cleveland Indians coming back from a 5-run deficit winning on a Jonathan Van Every homer in extra innings — his first of his MLB career — the Red Sox still have some things to figure out. Matt Garza is one and Josh Beckett is the other.
