I will just come out and say it. Jason Bay is playing well, really well. And Jason Bay is in his contract year.
Now, I’m not suggesting that is why Bay is playing so well. And I do not think that Bay will kill the ball like this, all season long.
Actually the largest reason why Bay seems to be excelling is because pitchers just keep grooving pitches right into his “Hot Zone(s).”
Sure, the numbers show that Youkilis has seen a rather large number of pitches per AB throughout his career. But to truly appreciate something like this, it must be seen. And to watch him battle, AB after AB, it is really incredible. How someone can have the motivation to battle as hard in a 7-1 game, as he does in a 3-2 game is beyond me.
Another side of the intangible argument, the fact that Youkilis will throw his body all over the diamond to get done what needs to get done. Whether it is a slide, a dive, a jump, whatever. He will do everything he can do to make the play, whether it’s made or not. And yes, that is an admirable trait.
