5/16: Aces Up
Time for Beckett to take this team on his back for a night and throw eight innings of one run ball. I’d settle for seven of two run ball, but anything less than a quality start is unacceptable.

And so far, Jon Lester just isn’t getting the job done. As fellow writer Evan discussed just the other day, Lester’s BABIP is rather high, currently sitting at .389. So balls in play will begin turning into outs more often down the road.
But in innings 3-6, Lester is clearly struggling a little more. An OPS allowed of 1.008, which is higher than the .819 allowed during the first three innings. Either way, it isn’t good. But if Lester is in fact struggling as the game moves into the deeper innings. Then maybe this is an issue with fatigue, which in turn would effect his command.
It’s still relatively early in the season, with roughly 20% of year gone by. And +18 is still a solid number. A larger “differential” than all but two teams in the American League have currently. So in that regard, it is definitely solid.
The “Pythagorean W-L” has the record at 19-16. So one could say the team has been slightly lucky over the first 35 games of the season (a small sampling).
But there are signs that the team should improve
Don’t be fooled, Ichiro can certainly hit the long ball too.
