Buy low, sell high. Brad Penny continues to fulfill, quite possibly, the oldest investment cliche ever.
Penny improved to 5-1 pitching 5 1/3 innings, yielding six hits, three runs, no walks and seven strikeouts.
Jonathan Papelbon almost lost the game for Penny giving up a two-run pinch hit home run to Joe Mauer in the bottom of the ninth. It was Mauer’s 11th homer of the season.
Kevin Youkilis and Jason Bay each drove home two runs in the win.
Stars of the Game – Bullpen (minus Paps), Jacoby Ellsbury, Penny
Ramon Ramirez and Hideki Okajima combined for 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Ellsbury went 2-for-5 extending his hitting streak to 20 games and he also scored a run. Penny continues to pitch well enough for the price he was acquired for.
Next Game – 5/26 vs. Minnesota Twins – Jon Lester/Nick Blackburn
Let’s remain in first place in the A.L. East.
