    Red Sox
    1. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
    2. J.D. Drew, RF
    3. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
    4. Jason Bay, LF
    5. Mike Lowell, 3B
    6. David Ortiz, DH
    7. Jason Varitek, C
    8. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
    9. Nick Green, SS
    – Josh Beckett, RHP
Same lineup as last night. Lets hope we get at least as much production against an inferior pitcher compared to Porcello. Another good start by Beckett would go a long way to restoring my confidence in him as well.

I blame f*cking Eck for blowing this. He couldn’t stop blabbing and jinxing this. Remy would have never done that!

God I hate Beckett. He lives to make this team unwatchable.

So what exactly has Beckett done wrong tonight Sean O? I mean he’s only got a one hitter going and is sparing our bullpen after a long day yesterday. I’m not going to complain about him tonight. Just seems a little bad-timed on your part…

Well as mentioned before, I hate him. I figured I’d watch now that the no-hitter was in full swing (leaving wedding prep, which I should’ve stayed with) in time for him to give up the hit.
Also, because I hate him and would’ve complained about the 2 walks even if he got a no hitter. Because I really, really, really hate him.

I’ve officially had it with Nick Green. Doing respectably at the plate, but he’s playing absolutely disgusting defense.
And now the whole infield is going to sh*t. Way to spread the disease, Nick.

Why can’t the Detroit players stay out of the freaking way tonight?

Here we go. Let’s make this a save situation, with Papelbon probably unavailable. Absolutely wonderful.
And I’m blaming all of this on Nick Green.

What an awful umpiring job tonight too. The HP ump has been just horribly inconsistent.

This is f*cking ridiculous. This ump really shouldn’t have a job. Hopefully Tek or Tito can get a decent argument and get themselves tossed too. Might as well get your money’s worth.

Player of the game: JOSH BECKETT. The Ace is back.
Goat of the game: Nick Green. Even with the Win, his awefull defence deserves our despise.

As Deanna Troi might say, “The tension level on this ship is rising, Captain.” I just said this the other night, but it bears saying again: So much vitriol, so much anxiety expended during a one-sided victory for the Sox. How much more hate would there be if, God forbid, the Sox had lost??
Of course, the real cause for the angst outbreak is simple: the Evil Empire has its act together. We were all hoping that ARod and Teix would pay the karmic price for their smug superiority, that the big-ticket investments in Sabathia and Burnett would go the way of the Carl Pavano contract, and that Joba would be a midge-ridden bust. But no: the Yankees are a very expensive and very powerful Death Star, and that makes Red Sox Nation a wee bit cranky. With the Yanks on our tails, suddenly every Papi strikeout and shortstop error is magnified in our imaginations.
Truth be told, the Red Sox are a very good team. Not a perfect one, but in a strong position to contend all year long. Even if the Yankees turn out to be a 110-win juggernaut, the Sox are likely to make the playoffs and be in a strong position for the postseason– even if they don’t make any big trades.
I’m not saying they should stand pat. But I am saying it’s not time for panic.

Why can FO just bring in Jack Wilson for SS?
Green is solely capable for part-time workers, and Lugo has already proved that he was fluk, should be filed into the Red Sox history. Moreover, Lowrie will not be the final solution for this position. Can’t Theo just do something good to fix up this huge hole?

The Ace is truly back. He keeps getting closer to 2007. Lester, Matsuzaka, Penny, Smoltz, Buchholz are also getting closer to their best stuff. Celebrate!
Nick Green made one error tonight, which didn’t cost the game, bringing his total to 9. He couldn’t have caught Dustin’s error toss because it was too far behind him and he was in the process of being taken down by the runner. Compare Nick (and Lugo) to three SS that bloggers regularly discussed trading for: O.Cab who has 8, K.Green and Furcal who have 7. K Green is hitting .200/.287/.295; O.Cab .233/.279/..296; Furcal .249/.314/.307. Nick is at .290/.356/.411. Lugo is .276/345/.368 with 4 E’s. Not bad, and Lowrie is near.
Neither did the errors by Mike Lowell and Dustin Pedroia cost the game. In a night of weirdness which in mere minutes went from a no- no to a massacre to 3E’s and Kotsay at 1b, Green at 3b, Resting Lugo at SS and Resting Rocco in RF. Awful umpiring that got Saito in a jam. Those last two innings were like a totally separate game. The Sox won both of them.
Meanwhile Papi raked again, though only one AB finally had some Luck of the Rays and fell in for an important 2-RBI hit.
Agree with JVWalt. I am surprised that this site is becoming so negative and angry. This team began the season as perhaps the best in baseball. It survived injuries and setbacks, and poor performances by half the team.
Last night Daisuke’s 2nd turn since being shut down showed he is getting it back . . . like Lester and Penny. Tonight, Beckett, Papi, JD and the whole team played well, won the game and return to Fenway with no worse than a split on a tough road trip. They are in first place, yet everyone is pissed and the angst is palpable. I guess I am a homer who still believes this team can win it all (did I mention they are in first place in June?), and that this is still the best rotation and pen, and that this lineup is extraordinarily relentless and strong.
I want to say I have the utmost respect for you, the baseball geniuses on Firebrand and MVN. The articles and discussions are insightful and intelligent. But sometimes I just don’t understand the vitriol that creeps in, reminding me of a Yankees site, or the bloggers and writers on the Herald.
I have, literally, followed this team for decades and, warts aside, don’t think I have seen one this good, with so many ways to win, with such a balance of experience and energy, with such depth for the long haul.
Sure we need a superior SS. IMO his name is Lowrie. We need a DH, and his name is Ortiz, and he is coming around, and even if he isn’t 100% he will still rank among the best. We don’t need a new starting catcher. Tek is hitting better than all those we clamored for in February: Salty, Montero, TG, Shoppach, Laird and R. Martin. We don’t need a 3b or 1b as Youk and Lowell are among the top hitters and defenders at their positions. I could go on. These are not rose-colored opinions. They are the facts.
As the 1st place Sox prepare for an important home stand, they are in 1st place, the hitting is back with this front-loaded high OBP lineup, the rotation is back, he pen is perfect, the farm is loaded, Kotsay, Smoltz, Buchholz, Lowrie are about ready. I smile alot lately.
