John Smoltz realizes that at his age, 42, there will be days when he doesn’t feel well.
Saturday wasn’t one of them.
Smoltz allowed one run and one hit while pitching six innings for the Pawtucket Red Sox in a rehab start against the Durham Bulls. Pawtucket beat Durham, 2-1.
The rehab start was his fourth overall but his first for Pawtucket and longest to date. Smoltz threw 51 of 74 pitches for strikes, walked two and struck out three.
Solutions aren’t easy to come by, because they must include a sacrifice. And a great “solution” will have to include a few good, young “sacrifices.” And parting with young talent, well, is just not an easy task.
There are roughly six players that interest me, some that will cost a bundle, some just a handful. One that might not even approve.
But if David Ortiz does not hit, a decision will need to be made, and soon.
Jon Lester looks to continue the great pitching. In 20 of the past 21 games, Red Sox pitching has allowed five runs or less. And the one time they did allow more than five, it was only six runs. The pitching has been really great, the bullpen and the starters combined. Continue the trend, Lester.
If Brady Penny is going to be traded then this outing didn’t help the Boston Red Sox front office.
