Next time I will pass on mentioning that I want to see Ryan Howard swing it for a series.
Howard made the Boston Red Sox pay in the bottom of the ninth hitting a game-tying solo home run to send the game to extra innings.
Boston rallied in the 13th inning scoring three runs sparked by a Jacoby Ellsbury’s RBI single to put Boston ahead 3-2.
Jon Lester’s gem was all but forgotten after Howard’s blast.
Jonathan Papelbon was unavailable in the ninth inning after completing two consecutive saves against the Yankees.
Kevin Youkilis and J.D. Drew both hit solo shots in the win.
Star of the Game – Lester
Lester went seven innings allowing one run on two hits, two walks and 11 strikeouts.
He pitched a gem and got nothing to show for it.
Next Game – 6/13 vs. Philadelphia Phillies – Daisuke Matsuzaka/Antonio Bastardo
Bastardo is 2-0 on the season with a 2.45 ERA.

I don’t usually like second-guessing a manager’s tactics in retrospect — a logical move can fail, a “stupid” move can succeed — but I can’t help wondering why Saito didn’t pitch the ninth. We signed him as a “backup closer” for nights when Papelbon needed a rest; Saito was obviously available, since he pitched later on; why not the ninth?
That said, it’s really nice to have a bullpen deep enough that we don’t have to resort to the Kyle Kendricks of the world in extra innings.

Never, ever mock el bastardo! And J.H., never mock your opponents. The curse has been reversed. That’s all we need.

i thought it would have made more sense for ramirez and okajima to switch innings with all of the lefties philly had up in the 9th.
while nitpicking i think saito is being underutilized as well

yeah, I agree, I believe or thought Saito would have and should have been in there. Ramirez has now stumbled in his last 2 relief stints ( 3 homeruns),he has been very good all year before then. The bullpen seperates the Sox from every other team in baseball. Theo made an excellent trade , Crisp for Ramirez Just a thought, will Bard be the closer for this team in the near future?
