So anyway, if anyone cares. I was just watching Cole Hamels’ first inning, and the gun was saying 88 on his fastballs. I was about to write a blog at my other site about his diminished velocity. But it didn’t seem right, so I checked the Gameday, and that said 92. Rarely do we ever see a gun showing less than the actual velocity…
Beckett’s curveball looks absolutely vicious tonight.
Odd, though I’ve noticed that the Giants telecasts somehow manage to take velocity off of Barry Zito’s already pedestrian fastball.
So it must say 78? :)
He can’t even reach the Reagan era on that thing, lol. Nah, it just takes a couple MPH off here and there…Mike Krukow likes to say that “You can’t judge Zito’s velocity by his radar gun readings,” which really makes no sense, except for the station’s own issues.

You are right about player of the game. Okajima was impressive too, right after he was unimpressive.
The Sox’ offensive struggles are at least partly related to playing in NL parks. With the DH, it’s easier to carry a couple of weak hitters at the end of the lineup. But when the pitcher has to bat, it has ripple effects on the back end of the lineup. Tonight’s #6-9 hitters: Varitek, Kotsay, Green, and the pitcher. Not much chance of an offensive explosion there.
