    Nice clutch hit, Kotsay!

Anyone want to explain the logic behind yanking Wakefield after 88 pitches?

Well, just a guess, but it’s also 88 degrees there, and Wakefield is 88 years old, so it probably just seemed appropriate.

Eh, I guess. Worked out, too, so I can’t complain.
Penny for the sweep tomorrow…and I get to watch on my actual TV finally b/c it’s on TBS.

Seriously, I expect it was a combination of the heat and the opportunity for Wakefield to leave with a lead that prompted Tito to make the move, and, as you say, it worked out.

Tito often pulls Wake in the 85-95 pitch range. Even though it seems like the knuckleball requires little or no effort, it’s probably wise to protect Wake’s arm. He has had physical issues the last few years; so when you’ve got a strong bullpen, don’t risk overtaxing him.
    Plus, it was hot.

Absolutely right JV. This is a luxury that the Red Sox are lucky to have. You wouldn’t have seen this in previous years, but when you can trot out Ramirez, MDC, Saito, Masterson, Paps, etc… it is easier to rest the starters, even in a one run game. This is something valuable that the Sox are able to utilize while the Yankees will not be able to do the same. Great to see the staff hold the team together on a hot, tough-hitting day.

If you have ever been to a baseball, football or soccer game in the sultry South when it is hot and humid, you know pulling a nearly 43 year old man with a history of mid-season injuries out of the game is a great idea. It was 100 degrees on the field and with the 95% humidity he must have felt like a steamed hot dog. Some of those innings were 1 -2 -3, with little time to sit in the shade and to rehydrate. His shirt was soaked. Why push it? 10-3. Wake, the last Sox pitcher to be an All-Star?
