My article from this morning may have just taken on a little extra context as it appears Mike Lowell is headed to the DL after a setback with his right hip.

    Hello from Barcelona…
It´s official: looks like Youk is our new 3B with a Kotsay/Bailey platoon at first. I´ve heard some speculation the Sox should trade for a 1B/3B but I´d be against that – when Lowell comes back, Bailey goes down. Lowrie will probably replace Lugo. Where´s the room?
The Sox bench lacks power, but I think that´ll be solved on a waiver deal in August.

Gammons was just about hanging crepe on ESPN this evening, saying the Red Sox have no idea how Lowell will respond or when/if he will return, and opining that the Sox “have to” get another bat.
If you assume he has some inside information, it looks bad for Lowell. But given that the trade deadline is still a month away, we can wait a couple weeks to see if Mike can come back. If he can’t, or his recovery is still uncertain in two or three weeks, then the Sox need another 3B or another 1B. Bailey/Kotsay is an adequate stopgap, but no solution for the stretch run or playoffs.
