7/1: How to handle a loss like last night.

Think positive. For it is one loss, not ten. I always understand that things like this happen. I mean, if there wasn’t a rain delay, the game probably would have ended in our favor anyway. And even with the delay, the best bullpen in baseball would normally have held onto a 4-1 lead. So a 10-1 lead was an eternity away for Orioles hitters.
Remember the “Mothers Day Miracle?” This was baseball’s way of evening things out. Because even great teams have days where you question what the heck just happened.
Fans tend to react too strongly to individual losses. And not strongly enough to individual wins. For when a good team loses–”your” good team–it can feel quite bad. But when they win, it doesn’t feel as good as that bad is bad, if that makes any sense. Because fans expect their “good team” to win. And if they don’t, it is disappointing. If they do, it is what was supposed to happen, what was supposed to take place.
The Red Sox are a great team. They aren’t perfect, but no team has ever been perfect…Ever. Their current “Ace” Josh Beckett takes the hill today. And this is one of the benefits of having great pitching. One always feels that they can win each and every day out with a rotation like this. And with Beckett on the mound, that feeling is even stronger, even greater.
Eventually, we will “steal” a win from the grips of losing. And on that day, it will come to light that it really does happen to the best and worst of them.

No worries. These guys will be fine. They understand the volatility of this game better than any of us. Some nights just suck. That’s the way it goes. At least it was against the O’s and not a contender. Anyways. Last night is over and gone. Beckett is gonna tear em up today. Go Sox.

I guess Pedroia forgot there were two outs and that Youk was on deck…

Apparently we don’t know how to handle that loss…

Damn. I honestly expected a better showing from Beckett today. Guess I should’ve known better. He’s completely unpredictable. Guess it’s up to the O. Cmon guys, return the favor.

No. Looks like Beckett wants to spend the ASB in Texas. Pathetic, part II.

Whether or not Becks makes the ASG or not I couldn’t care. If anything I’d prefer that as many people get as much rest as possible.

I agree; rest is better. They seem to need it. At the end of play tonight (assuming the Yankees can dispatch the Mariners), the Sox will have shaved 3.5 games off of their AL East lead in just one week.

This is how you take a loss like last night: shove it down their goddamn throats in the 9th inning. I was so frustrated with the ‘07 team for the 3 months between the Mother’s Day Miracle and the middle part of August, because when things got tough they just gave up.
This team is not as talented or intimidating (though not by a dramatic amount), but many teams would’ve rolled over and took it in the 9th tonight. But these mofos fought, whether we keep this lead or not.
Be proud of them, they brought it.

Nice! I’m always happy to be proven wrong when I take my pessimism out and show it to everybody. Maybe I should do it more often… ;-)

Do we call this one the “Canada Day Miracle?”

It’s better than the Canada Eve Massacre from yesterday, right?

One and done. Are you prescient? That is scary. Beckett gave us some good innings. The Pen is redeemed. Julio and Rocco join Youk, Pedroia, Ellsbury among today’s heroes. Life is good.
