Before the season started, Keith Law mentioned that Ramon Ramirez may not have been as good as advertised. I listened, but gave Ramirez the chance to prove Law wrong. For I looked at the Ramirez trade as a way to rid of salary (Coco Crisp). And also a way to bring in a solid reliever in Ramon–although unspectacular.
Ramirez was great in 2008. A 2.84 FIP, and a mesmerizing 0.25 home runs per nine, which was not sustainable.
This year however, Law looks again to be right. But I don’t think we are wrong…yet. Ramirez currently has a 4.45 FIP, which is high for a reliever. And the only relievers that are below him in the Red Sox pen are: Hunter Jones, Javier Lopez, and Jonathan Van Every. Jones is not on the current roster. Ditto for Lopez. And Van Every is a position player.
Not good company for Ramirez.
So I pose the question: With a .195 BABIP, and a 4.45 FIP, what do we have in Ramon Ramirez?

We have a great set up guy who is repeatedly used incorrectly in closing situations, who is incorrectly stretched out, and allowed to hang out to dry when he doesn’t have it.
Exactly the same as Saito and Delcarmen. What is the code that says a pitcher without good stuff, in a tight RP situation, should be kept in the game to . . . to what? preserve the rest of the pen? regain confidence? prove himself? BS. The game is on the line, use a quick hook, win the game. That was disgraceful today. Is it Farrell telling Tito “he’ll be alright” or is it Tito telling Farrel “let’s stick with him a while.”
I write this after Saito was left in to take the loss in yet another tie game when the Sox couldn’t buy a hit, even though he showed, batter after batter, that he was not pitching well. Arm? Fatigue? Head? Doesn’t matter. He should have been pulled quickly.
I remind you of recent poor use of Hansen, Buchholz, Aardsma, Lopez, Zinc, Jones. Only Aardsma has recovered. He got better and better until his injury, and we used him up and let him go. Dumb.
A low leverage reliever.
well, coco suffered a torn labrum shoulder and missed the rest of the season. what else is there to ponder. Besides, jacoby needs to be our everyday center fielder sooner rather than later.
I was fine with the trade. I was just wondering what everyone’s take on Ramirez individually was.
