Boston’s bullpen will be thanking Jon Lester.
The crafty lefty pitched eight shutout innings allowing just four hits, two walks and eight strikeouts giving the pen a break.
Only Jonathan Papelbon was used in the ninth completing his 23rd save of the season.
Dustin Pedroia drove in Boston’s lone run with a wall-ball double to deep left field.
Star of the Game – Lester
Two incredibly positive things from this outing. One being that Lester has got it going. Two being that the bullpen caught a break in last night’s win.
Next Game – 7/11 vs. Kansas City Royals – Gil Meche/John Smoltz
Smoltz will treat the Fenway Faithful to a better start this time around.

Interesting that you use the term “crafty lefty”, because he is usually called a “power arm”. I guess he has become dominant because he is both, making him a “crafty power pitcher”??? He will become increasingly hard to beat as he perfects his craft, and his power increases.
And Smoltz was indeed a treat tonight. Good call. As were Saito, Bard, Youk, Papi, Tek, Pedroia, JD, Nick, Ells, Mark and Aaron Bates. A pitching duel followed by a whatever, for 2W and 1st place.
With Beckett and a ticked off Bullpen, what will tomorrow bring?
