Daisuke Matsuzaka may be gone…and to many in 2009 forgotten, but the Red Sox have continued to hold out hope that he’ll be “in the mix” come September and potentially the playoffs should the team make it into October ball.

This week, the old cliche gone but not forgotten has reared it’s ugly head. In an interview with a Japanese media outlet, Daisuke Matsuzaka took some dirty laundry public all but blaming the Red Sox strength and conditioning program for his injury and his struggles this season.

Red Sox trade Kotsay for Anderson

Written on July 28th, 2009 by Evan Brunell47425 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/07/28/red-sox-trade-kotsay-for-anderson.htmlRed+Sox+trade+Kotsay+for+Anderson2009-07-28+19%3A08%3A01Evan+Brunell

The Red Sox have traded first-baseman/outfielder Mark Kotsay to the Chicago White Sox for centerfielder Brian Anderson.

Anderson has roughly 2.5 years of MLB service, so is under Sox (the red kind this time) control through 2013, if my shady calculations are correct.

Anderson, 27, has 782 career at-bats in the bigs posting a poor .225/.288/.364 line. In Triple-A, he is at .279/.311/.488. He is a gifted defensive centerfielder, but has long struggled with the bat. Earlier, he requested the White Sox trade him so he could get more playing time. That’s not happening in Boston. It’s unclear the plans the Sox have for Anderson. If I was a guessing man, he’s the new starting centerfielder for the PawSox.

Red Sox Trade for Brian Anderson

Written on July 28th, 2009 by Daniel Rathman47410 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/07/28/red-sox-trade-for-brian-anderson.htmlRed+Sox+Trade+for+Brian+Anderson2009-07-28+19%3A00%3A00Daniel+Rathman

Brian Anderson isn’t much for hitting, but at least he has an acceptable UZR for a 5th outfielder.
Let the “zomg we’re trading Ellsbury111″ teeth gnashing begin.

Torn about Victor Martinez.

Written on July 28th, 2009 by Ryne Crabb47396 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/07/28/torn-about-victor-martinez.htmlTorn+about+Victor+Martinez.2009-07-28+18%3A45%3A00Ryne+Crabb

Victor Martinez is a very good hitting catcher. But I am torn as to whether or not something of value should be given up to get him. Because he isn’t always a catcher. He sometimes plays first base as well, as we all know.

If acquired–as mentioned–something of quality would need to be surrendered. Whether that be Buchholz or Bowden, plus someone, I really don’t know. Anyway, if Victor Martinez puts on a Red Sox uniform before August 1st, then which position will he play, predominantly.

BOS 8, OAK 3: Beckett bounces back

After a shaky start against the Texas Rangers, Josh Beckett returned to form against Oakland.

Poll: What should Theo do at the deadline?

Written on July 28th, 2009 by Tim Daloisio47380 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/07/28/poll-what-should-theo-do-at-the-deadline.htmlPoll%3A+What+should+Theo+do+at+the+deadline%3F2009-07-28+13%3A58%3A51Tim+Daloisio
New Poll Question:
With the trade deadline approaching and rumors flying, where should Theo and the front office focus their efforts?
  • Package prospects including Lars Anderson and young pitching to SD for Adrian Gonzalez
  • Buchholz and the farm for Roy Halladay
  • Keep pushing for Victor Martinez
  • Pull the big trigger on a larger Martinez/Cliff Lee package
  • Still looking for a full time short stop
  • Minor tweaks, but LaRoche was enough of an addition to make this team playoff ready
  • Stand pat, we’re good to go as is.
Go big or go home? or play it conservative?
As always, new poll is up to the right…vote away and argue it out in the comments.
