Would you have been happier with Buchholz, Bowden, Bard, Masterson & Reddick for Hernandez?
I would rather have VMart, Buch, Bowden, Bard, Reddick than Hernandez, Hagadone, Price (assuming Masterson goes in both deals)
I agree, Tim. Too much to give up. But Felix, Lester, Beckett I could have talked myself into for the next year+ :)
I say no way this it true. If it was then the Mariners are simply stupid and I would have been updet to lose that much for one guy
Saw that rumor. I’m sure something was discussed, but the details have to be wrong. No way they would have given up “any 5″.
I would imagine the talks didn’t go much further than the Hanley talks in the offseason. Theo probably called, asked about the price, maybe talked about a few players (I’m guessing Buchholz, Kelly, and Lars were names mentioned), thanks the Mariners for their time, and then called the Indians back up about V-Mart.
Thank you for typing my comment for me.
None of the guys reported to be in the offer have much of a chance to ever be anything remotely like King Felix. Add them all up and they’re still nowhere near him. Felix is a generational talent, as in once in a generation. I believe Theo would have made the offer and I can see why the Mariners might turn it down. That’s a guy you build around, not a guy you use as a chip to rebuild with.
Lucky for us the Expos disagreed with their generational talent, huh?
Once in a Generation? Off the top of my head I can name 5 pitchers of the same if not better dominance we have seen. In no Particular order
Randy Johnson
Pedro
Santana
Beckett
Halladay
I have about 8 more names I could list. We gave up Pavano and Tony Armas JR for Pedro. We gave up Hanley and Sanchez for Beckett. If Theo offered any 5 of the 8 and the Mariners said no then once again they are as stupid as this rumor is.
Half the guys on your list could be Felix’s father so I think you missed the point of the phrase “generational”
The point I was making Ted was regardless of how great he is (and I do think he is great) there will always be pitchers of his dominance. 5 Top rated prospects in all of Baseball for one dominant pitcher would be a crazy price to pay.
In any case, let me clarify. He burst on the scene as an 18 year old and is now what, 23? This guy hasn’t even reached his peak and he could lead a team like the Sox or Yanks to multiple championships. When he signs a multi-year deal like C.C’s it will lock him up right through his prime years instead of paying a guy strictly for past performance. He is probably the most valuable guy in the league and highly underrated, especially it seems by many here.
Paul, there will always be dominant pitchers, and thankfully Theo and the Sox want as many of them as possible. However, there are a finite number of them and if you have the chance to get one, you do it. It’s not crazy to trade a bunch of guys who might someday be half as good as the guy you’re trying to trade for. Who in that group reportedly offered would we actually miss? Just Bard by my thinking. Paul Byrd could do anything Buchholz or Bowden would be likely to do for us.
That’s why Johan f’n Santana should be on our team right now.
I would trade Lester straight up for Santana right now. There is no comparison between Felix and Santana.
Well, considering we effectively could’ve traded Ellsbury and Masterson for him, we got jobbed bigtime. And thus we’re missing an ‘08 ring.
Well, I can’t imagine where you’re getting that other than from your own imagination.
Major typo… I WOULD NOT trade Lester straight up for Santana.
Whatshisname from the Twins called Theo the day they traded Santana to the Mets asking for a final offer, AFTER the Yankees had already dropped out. Considering the Twins ended up getting two pieces of string and some lint for him, Ellsbury, Masterson and maybe Lowrie would’ve gotten it done easy.
This is what I always say, at least there’s someone out there who agrees with me
I can’t imagine that it would only have taken Ellsbury and Masterson. Didn’t they at first offer one of Lester or Ells and they said no.
yeah and then they traded him for Carlos Gomez (awful hitter) and nothing else. Ellsbury and Masterson was a better package than that even at the time.
