Nick Cafardo says the Red Sox have placed a waiver claim on shortstop Cristian Guzman. 31, Guzman has revived his career over the last three years with the Washington Nationals, hitting well over .300 each of the three years.
Average to below-average defensively according to certain defensive metrics, Guzman also cannot take a walk. However, when hitting .300 with decent pop, you can’t complain. Guzman would represent a vast improvement. He’s in the first year of a two-year, $16 million contract. The Sox desperately need someone like Guzman for the short- and long-term. Acquiring Guzman would theoretically solve the offensive conundrum. It remains to be seen if the Nationals will send Guzman to Boston. Now, for that starting pitching…

I’m liking this. Excited to see Guzman in Fenway (hopefully by Monday night vs. Detroit).

although I’m having a hard time seeing how this guy is any better than Lugo (with a similarly shitty contract)

It sucks so much the way Lowrie’s career has been de railed by this wrist injury. I really thought he was going to be the solution, but now it looks like he might never get off the ground

WHAT? Why did we just take on yet another Lugo contract after finally biting the bullet on him? If we have all this extra goddamn money, why can’t we acquire a single good player?
What the hell is Theo doing?

Pretty solid pickup for the Red Sox. It looks like Guzman will be able to keep up this average hitting, and that makes him an asset. He probably isn’t worth 8 million a year but that’s not too far off from his true value.
If you’re the Nationals, you have to just let the Red Sox have him. There is no reason for them to be paying a mediocre shorstop so much. That money can be used to garner much more long term value.

Between Lugo and Guzman we will have $17 mill. tied up in the SS position. The team has quit Theo, move on to next year. We just blew 3 pitching prospects for V-Mart in an already wasted season. Stop.

    A. There is no way this season is already “over.” And you won’t convince me that it is until we’re mathematically out of the running for at least the WC.
    B. If this was Guzman’s last year, I would be all for this. As it is, paying him that much next year is not something I’m very keen on. His resurgence is in the NL East, and he was never a good AL player. There’s got to be something better for the rest of the year until we can make a J.J. Hardy trade in the offseason (no way he’ll make it to us through the waiver deal now, we’d have to wait). He’s obviously an upgrade over Nick Green, but I can still see him being below average overall.

no its over, it’s super over, its vanilla ice over. this team SUCKS even the guys who don’t suck like Bard SUCK. This team can’t win a game on the road or against a winning team to save it’s life. look at it no wins against winning teams since the break.

I’m sorry but in what sense is this a solid pickup, Guzman can’t field and can’t get on base, that’s basically the essentials of being a baseball player, he sucks

I’m willing to bet the Sox pounce all over Delgado when the Mets put him on waivers.

Guzman is a lousy fielder (-6.6 UZR/150), a mediocre hitter (.330 wOBA), and vastly overpaid ($8 MM for 2010!).
He is a definite upgrade over Green/Woodward, though.
That said, the Sox’ season is not Super Over, and it is certainly not Vanilla Ice Over.

Since 2007, he’s been worth +13.5 runs with the bat and -10 runs with the glove. That makes him about a league average player which is equal to 2 WAR. Being that Nick Green is a replacement level player, this is an overpriced upgrade that the Red Sox can afford.

Seems like Guzman is not a member as of this afternoon. He has officially cleared waivers but no claim has been awarded (N. Cafardo). There’s still a chance we don’t end up with him, and instead make a play for J.J. Hardy? I don’t know how much better that would be since we’d likely have to give up pitching whereas we’d likely get Guzman just by taking his salary. I doubt at this point that Scutaro will clear waivers and be dealt to Boston, as he’s the best candidate from where I’m sitting.
